HOW MOTORCYCLING HAS CHANGED THROUGHOUT THE YEARS

Because technology has advanced so much, motorcycles no longer look like their original form. Manufacturers have had to adapt to meet the demands of bikes, and that has led to change.

Motorcycles have come a long ways since their humble beginnings as penny-farthings equipped with steam engines and hooked up to them. Brands now experiment with safety measures and eco-friendly designs.

Steam-powered bikes

The origins of the first motorcycles can be traced back to 1867, when Ernest Michaux, the son a Parisian blacksmith called Pierre Michaux, fitted a small steam engine to a bicycle. He was also responsible for creating some of the earliest bicycle models. Sylvester H. Independently from Roper, Louis-Guillaume Perreaux, a French engineer, patents a single-cylinder steam engine using an alcohol burner and twin belt drives. Perreaux's machine wasn't made operable until 1871. In 1881, Lucius Copeland, Phoenix, Arizona, built a steam boiler capable of powering a penny-farthing. This was a bicycle that had a small wheel in front and a large wheel in the back.

Copeland's contribution to the history and development of bicycles is the most important. In 1887, he founded the Northrop Manufacturing Co., which would produce the first "Moto-Cycle", with three wheels. Copeland made 200 "Phaeton Steamers". After 5 minutes of steam building, they could reach speeds up to 10 MPH. To showcase his invention, Copeland traveled 120 miles round trip from New York City. Copeland was unable to make enough money by 1891 so he retired.

First commercial products

The Butler Petrol Cycle was a three-wheeled motorcycle that existed before Copeland's Phaeton steamers. It was first made by Edward Butler in England in 1884. The liquid-cooled engine allowed riders to control the bike's speed using a throttle lever. A foot-operated lever was used to stop the Cycle. Like Copeland, Butler did not achieve commercial success.

However, manufacturers soon began to equip their bikes with internal-combustion engines. This helped brands achieve sustainability. Peugeot Motorcycles, the oldest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, showcased their first model in 1898.

The advancements in engine technology allowed bike manufacturers to go beyond bicycles and eventually, motorcycle manufacturers grew. The number of motorcycle manufacturers grew as the 20th century progressed. Royal Enfield's first model was released in 1901. Later, he would create the Royal Enfield Bullet. This motorcycle design was to be the longest-lasting in history.
