Why is Growing Automotive Sector Driving Demand for Powder Coatings?

The automotive sector is witnessing robust growth since the past few years, owing to technological advancements, swift economic growth, and increasing disposable income. A larger number of people are now opting for personal vehicles, which is why the production of automobiles has risen drastically over the past few years. Moreover, the demand for luxurious cars has also been growing as the number of millionaires in the world is rising. Attributed to all these factors, the demand for paints can coatings in the automotive industry has also been increasing, specifically of powder coatings.

It is because of such factors that the global powder coatings market is expected to witness considerable growth in the years to come. Powder coatings have low operational costs, excellent performance, are available in various colors and exhibit anti-bacterial and anti-corrosion properties. Moreover, the environment-friendly nature of these coatings, as opposed to traditional painting and coating solutions, is also a major factor for their growing adoption across a number of industries. Governments across the globe are implementing strict policies regarding emissions of volatile organic compounds, which is predicted to drive the demand for powder coatings.

Powder coatings consist of polymer resin that is combined with pigments, flow modifiers, curatives, leveling agents, and other additives including extenders and tin pigments. All these ingredients are mixed, melted, cooled, and then grounded into a uniform powder. Powder coatings can be thermoset or thermoplastic polymer. Resins, including epoxy and polyester, and curing agents for binding are used in the manufacturing process of powder coatings. A process called electrostatic spray deposition is employed for the application of powder coatings on metal surface, wherein a spray gun is used for applying an electrostatic charge to the powder particles.

These particles are then attracted to the grounded parts, which then enter a curing oven where, along with heat, the coating chemically reacts for producing long molecular chains, leading to high cross-link density. This is most common method of applying powder coatings. Powder coatings can further be applied on to non-metallic substrates, including medium density fiberboard and plastics.

In conclusion, the demand for powder coating is growing due to the expansion of the automotive industry.
