Cockapoo puppies can be trained with relative ease because of their intellect and initiative. The simple commands of sit, stay, and come are picked up quickly. Early socialization of your new dog is important. This is achieved by exposing him to as many people of all ages and other animals as possible. This will make a much better pet out of your new cockapoo puppy.

Since cockapoos are bred from two pure breeds and are not a pure breed themselves there is no training standard for them. In general these dogs are mild mannered, get along well with humans, and desire to please their masters. There are some deviations from this personality trend, however, that can include possessiveness of food and toys, begging, and hard headedness. As a new owner you need to be a strong leader and guide your dog using positive reinforcement methods that are consistent. This will keep your dog in the proper place in the family pecking order and discourage him from trying to be the boss.

As training begins you should get your new puppy used to your physical touch. This will be important in handling him during the grooming and brushing process that will become a part of his daily life. The pleasure of your touch will facilitate your grooming efforts. Start his grooming as soon as he becomes familiar with your touch.

Another training issue is the elimination of biting. This biting is a natural consequence of cutting new teeth and most puppies do it. If he nips or bites at you pull you hand away and say "no" in a firm manner. This will convince him that biting is not acceptable. If he is allowed to bite as a puppy he may continue to do so as an adult.

Potty training is the next thing on the list. It should begin by you deciding where you want your dog to relieve himself regularly. When you first bring him home take him to his potty place for an introductory visit. Let him take a good look at the area and then return home. You may play with him and feed him but be sure to take him back to his potty area within the hour. Cockapoo puppies need to have access to the potty place at least once per hour when they are really small. Between trips you need to be on the lookout for other times when he may need to go. Indications that he needs to go can be moving around in circles, sniffing the floor, or arching his back. If you see him doing any of these take him to his potty area at once. With a little practice he will soon be doing what he should and you should praise him for good behavior.
