Research institutes in Europe

A research institute, research center, or research center is a non-profit organization dedicated to conducting research. Basic research institutes and applied research institutes are two types of research institutes. Although the name is frequently associated with natural scientific study, many research institutes exist in the social sciences, particularly for sociological and historical research.

The 17th century scientific academy arose from the convulsions of the Scientific Revolution. The Royal Society was founded in London in 1660, while the Académie royale des sciences was founded in France by Louis XIV in 1666, although private academic assemblies had been established earlier in the seventeenth century to stimulate study.

Peter the Great established an educational-research institute in his newly created imperial capital, St Petersburg, in the early 18th century. His proposal included facilities for linguistic, philosophical, and scientific education, as well as a separate institution where graduates might continue their scientific studies. It was the first university in Europe to perform scientific research within the framework of a university.

There are many government-funded institutions such in the continent of Europe as the European Space Agency (ESA), the CERN nuclear research facility, the European Southern Observatory ESO (Grenoble), the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) (Grenoble), the EUMETSAT facility, the Italian-European Sistema Trieste with, among others, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics and the research complex Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, the EMBL biology project, and the EU

Scientific institutions and societies play an important part in the scientific process and help to build scientific knowledge. This section delves into these many bodies, focusing on three types in particular: research institutions, professional associations, and funding institutions. Specific instances demonstrate how these institutions are critical to scientific development.
