How to Choose the Best Items for Your Baby

It’s easy to get carried away and splurge more than usual when shopping for baby items in Singapore, especially if you're a first-time parent.

When looking for baby items in Singapore, it’s important that you consider what your baby actually needs right now, not a year from now! Otherwise, you’re going to end up with a pile of pricey clothes and toys that your little one can’t even use.

We’re here to share some baby shopping tips to save you some cash and several trips to the return counter. Read on below!

  1. Research, before anything else

From diaper bags to cribs to baby monitors to onesies, there’s a never-ending list of baby items in Singapore

The thing is, you don’t need all of them at once, so hit up the Internet on the things that your newborn baby actually needs in the first months. These include nappies, shirts, rocking chairs, cribs, cradles, monitors, and changing pads.

Read up on different baby products to know which model works for you and your little one (or where to score them at a lower price).

It’s common for most mums to go with the higher end brands and models, but that shouldn’t always be the case! It’s fine to buy some baby items in Singapore at a bargain price!

If you have some parent-friends, ask them to give you reviews on their favourite baby products. There’s nothing more credible than what other parents had to say!

  1. Don’t rush!

Trust us, your baby will grow faster than a blink of an eye. By the time they can fit into something, they have almost grown out of them - which is worth remembering when looking for clothes.

Get only what your baby needs for the first few months, so don’t get excited by the endless variety of baby clothes!

Babies tend to have 5 growth spurts in the first year, so a piece of clothing would typically last for 2 to 3 months. It’s not practical to purchase a year’s worth of clothes all at once.

After a year, that’s when you can purchase more clothes in a single shopping trip as their growth slows down a little. This is when clothes would usually last 6 months at a time.

  1. Go gender-neutral

Gone are the days of strictly associating the colours blue to boys and pink to girls!

If you plan on having more babies, opting for bigger sizes and neutral colours is the right way to go! It’s more practical and cost-efficient to have baby items that can be reused and repurposed by all your children.

The task of shopping for baby items in Singapore (or anywhere) becomes easier when you’re connecting a certain colour with the gender of your baby. You’ll have more options to choose from!

  1. Consider the weather

In a tropical country like in Singapore, we only have 2 types of weather: sunny or rainy. That makes it a bit easier shopping for baby items!

Unless you’re travelling to the western hemisphere soon, there’s no need to get your baby full-scale winter gear.

For scorching hot days, your little one will only need lighter clothes like t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, and shorts, while long-sleeve shirts, pyjamas, and onesies for rainy and slightly colder months.

  1. Don’t blindly follow the trends

Just because every mother on the Internet swear by a particular baby product, it doesn’t mean it will work for you and your baby!

There’s nothing wrong with following the trends, but make sure to do your homework and check the reviews. You might come across another baby item that might be more suitable for the current needs of your little one.

For example, a vibrating swing might make your neighbour’s baby doze off to dreamland in minutes but could send yours to a total meltdown at midnight.
