The word Diwali is a fusion of two Sanskrit words- Deep and Avali Deep means lamp and Avali signifies now. Thus it is literal meaning in the row of lights or lamps. The festival is celebrated by Indian Diaspora by lighting the old lamps. Diwali or Deepawali is one of the major religious festivals of India. It is celebrated by the followers of Hiduism, Sikhism and Jainism across India and other parts of the world. During the month of Kartika which normally falls in October or the mid of November. This festival symbolizes the victory of goodness over evils and light over darkness. This year Diwali 2022 is going to be a mega festival.

Diwali Background

The inception of Diwali can be traced back with Indian legends. This festival is in remembrance of the return of Lord Ram with Sita to Ayodhya after killing the demons and spending a span of 14 years of exile. This is 5 days festival starting with Dhanteras and culminates with Bhai Dooj. This festival is associated with goddess of prosperity Lakshmi and marks the starting of anew financial year.

The other legends say that Diwali fall son the birthday of Goddess Lakshmi and this is the special day of his marriage with Lord Vishnu. In south India people celebrate Diwali as the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narkasur Diwali.

How Diwali is celebrated?

Deepawali is almost a week long festival when people get a chance to rejoice and people engage themselves in cleaning their houses. The celebration starts with Dhanteras when Lord of health and Ayurveda Dhanvantri is worshiped. The houses are decorated with lamps and Rangoli.

The second day is Narak Chaturdasi which is also called Chooti Diwali This day is related to the worship of Shakti or Mahakali who killed the demon Narkasura. This day is also called Kali Chaudas. In the south Indian states of Tamilnadu, Karnataka Narak Chaturdasi is on the same day when Diwali is celebrated. On this day Kali Mata, Lord Krishna are worshiped on north east corner of the house

On the third day people worship Lord Hanuman and decorate their houses and business establishments with flower wreathes. In the evening special diwali Puja is performed when Lord Ganesha and goddess Lakshmi is worshiped. Later houses one lit with dias (earthen lamps) and candles and fire crackers are burnt. On this eve people buy jewelry, fabrics and exchange sweets and the fourth day of Diwali celebration Goverdhan Pooja is done with Annakut.

People offer a large variety of food to Lord Krishna as a mark of showing their gratitude. It is considered that on this day Lord Krishna saved Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra by giving a shelter of Goverdhan hill, while he lifted it on his fingers toe. Bhai Dooj or Bhai tika is the culmination of Diwali. On this day which falls on second lunar day Shukla Paksha, sisters and brothers show their affection.

Diwali Puja Vidhi

Before commence Puja rituals you have to be fresh and have a shower. Choose the right place in north direction and place a wooden seat on which place the idol of Goddess Lakshmi, besides place the 5 deities called Panchdev- Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Ganesha and Surya. After anointing the idols with holy Ganges water, have a seat and invoke goddess. Now after 16 materials and recite Lakhi mantra After the worship is over disburse prasadam among the people. At the culmination of Puja ceremony start Aarti of Lakshmi ji all the family members should assemble together at Puja time.
