What is a Federal Firearms License?

A federal firearms license (FFL) is issued by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Bureau of the US Department of Justice. It is required to sell or manufacture guns. There are different kinds of FFLs like Dealer in firearms other than destructive devices (Type 1), Manufacturer of ammunition other than armor piercing ammunition (Type 6), Manufacturer of firearms other than destructive devices (Type 7), Dealer in destructive devices (Type 10) and Importer of firearms or ammunition.

What does a Federal Firearms Licensee need to know?

If you want to sell guns, it is advisable for you to acquire a Type 01 FFL. It will allow you to buy and sell guns wholesale. The Type 02 FFL is required to buy and sell weapons for profit, but it does not permit you to sell them at retail unless you have a Type 09 Federal Firearms License. It is also known as the "gunsmith FFL."

The Type 06 FFL enables you to work as a gunsmith or manufacturer of ammunition. You can manufacture firearms, ammunition and destructive devices under this license. The Type 07 FFL is required to manufacture, import and deal in NFA weapons only. It permits you to work as a gunsmith or manufacturer of firearms that are not defined as Destructive Devices under the National Firearms Act.

There are other special types of FFLs like Type 08 FFL (Collector of Curios and Relics), Type 09 FFL (Manufacturer of Firearms other than Destructive Devices).
