The health risks of sitting for too long are scientifically proven


Studies have shown that people who sit for long periods of time are at increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, cervical and lumbar diseases. This is especially true if you sit in an unhealthy posture.



The origins of the standing desk

Standing desks are by no means a recent invention. In fact, many famous intellectuals, writers, and politicians have embraced standing desks as a means of improving posture and improving concentration -- Thomas Jefferson, Ernest Hemingway, and Charles Darwin among them.


The theory behind standing desks is sound: Based on a meta-analysis of studies done on the topic, it's clear that sitting for long periods of time leads to higher mortality rates. So, the thinking goes, standing should solve the problem. The correct?


Well, the answers there are frustratingly vague. Part of the reason why this is such a hard question to answer is that we're not entirely sure why sitting is so bad. We know it's bad for your posture, and we know it can cause circulation problems. It's also a strong indicator of obesity (though this is more a lifestyle issue than a direct link to sitting). So if posture and obesity are the two main problems with sitting, are standing desks the answer?


Standing desk benefits

While the new study suggests that a standing desk is unlikely to help with weight loss or avoiding weight gain, there may be other benefits of a standing desk.. Advocates of standing desks point to studies showing that after a meal, blood sugar levels return to normal faster on days a person spends more time standing. And standing, rather than sitting, may reduce the risk of shoulder and back pain.


Other potential health benefits of a standing desk are assumed based on the finding that long hours of sitting are linked with a higher risk of

  • obesity
  • diabetes
  • cardiovascular disease
  • cancer (especially cancers of the colon or breast)
  • premature death.


But “not sitting” can mean many different things — walking, pacing, or just standing — and as the new study on energy expenditure shows, the health effects of these may not be the same. For most of these potential benefits, rigorous studies of standing desks have not yet been performed. So, the real health impact of a standing desk is not certain.
