Online classes have been the new normal since the pandemic arrived and have brought the world to a standstill. With individuals following social distancing and preferring to stay at home, educators see no option other than to navigate the uncharted waters of online learning. Providers are offering a Learning Management System for schools to help them get through online learning. Although online learning model has many benefits, one of the issues that educators face is the lack of engagement activities for students online. Having said that, let’s look at a few ways teachers can keep K-12 students engaged online.

Digital Polls

Digital polls could be an interesting activity to help students connect with a lesson. Teachers can use one of the many survey and poll creation tools available and take the poll before, during, or after the class. The poll could be about any issue discussed in the lesson or to find out if students found a lesson or topic interesting. Then, teachers can have open discussions with students based on the result of the poll.

Classroom Newspaper

Another interesting activity that will help in keeping students engaged and focused. A dedicated blog can be created for the class; wherein teachers can give assignments to students or students pitch a story themselves. The story could be about anything from current political scenarios, science and technology, or even fiction.

Online Debates

Debates is another fun activity that will involve the participation of every student. Teachers can choose a subject and make a group of students or even let students participate individually. Topics should be searched in such a way that students can speak for the pro and con side as well. Online debates are a great way to let students dig deeper into topics and show their critical thinking abilities. These also improve the research skills of students.

Self-assessment

Self-assessment lets students see their progress and gives them the confidence to take control of their learning. Teachers can create self-assessment forms or give self-assessment projects to students. Several tools make self-assessment easy, quick, fun, and interactive. Also, teachers will get a lot of data from these self-assessments, which can help them formulate study plans for students.

Final Words

Online learning might not be an old concept, but it has made significant changes in the education system. Teachers are shedding the old norms and adapting to the trends, and students are getting more familiar with the technology that will help them stay ahead in the competition. However, learning is a two-way process, and till the time both students and teachers are not on the same page, it is impossible to achieve the desired outcome with online classes. Therefore, both schools and teachers must take the initiatives to provide an engaging learning environment to students. Hope the above-discussed tips will help in doing so.
