Know the Dos and Don'ts for Better Eyesight

Eyes are precious, eyes need care

No need to remind you that your eyes are precious, but you should remember that eyes need care too. Your eyes are busy spending hours before the laptop screen or smartphone screen, watching TV, remaining glued to your favorite books for hours after hours, etc, which can harm your vision. Take out some time from your busy daily schedule, and take some much-needed care for your eyes. Follow certain simple dos and don’ts to maintain healthy eyesight.


The ‘Dos’ for eyesight improvement

  • Consume eye-friendly food: Eat foods full of vitamin A, Vitamin C, lutein, and beta carotene that are good for your eyes. Take carrots (rich in vitamin A), fruits and vegetables, especially dark leafy greens such as kangkong, broccoli, camote tops (talbos), spinach, and the yellow variety of watermelon (contains lutein). Fishes rich in omega-3 fatty acids are also helpful for better eyesight.
  • Wear protective glasses: Wear sunglasses not only to look cool but also to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Buy only scratch-free sunglasses, which can block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Wear protective glasses during certain activities, like basketball or swimming.
  • Do exercise for eyesight improvement. You might be surprised to know that exercise and deep slow breathing can reduce your eye pressure by helping in the drainage of eye fluid (the lymphatic system). This is particularly helpful for patients with glaucoma, in which the affected person experiences increased eye pressure.
  • Give your eyes a break. Close your eyes when you are not using them. Eyes will feel fresh.
  • Wash your hands. Wash your hands frequently to avoid eye infections.
  • Get enough sleep: Adequate sleep can help to recover from a long day’s work.
  • Wash your eyes: Wash your eyes in clean water every night and every morning to avoid infection.
  • Keep your blood sugar under control: Diabetes can put you at higher risk of eye disease. So control your blood sugar level.
  • Get your yearly eye checkup done: Eye diseases like glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration may not come with warning signs. Eye problems may be there even when you feel that your vision is fine. So do go to the eye specialist for eye checkup.
  • Blink more often: Frequent blinking can help to avoid dry eyes.


The don’ts for eyesight improvement

  • Do not look at the sun and other bright lights bare eyes: Looking at bright lights and laser pointers is harmful to your eyes.
  • Do not read books or work in low lights, and moving vehicles: Working or reading in low lights, and constant motion of the car strain your eyes.
  • Do not spend long hours at the computer or TV: Constant looking at a computer or TV screen can strain your eyes. Move your eyes away from the screen every 20 minutes, for 20 seconds. This practice can help to reduce eyestrain.
  • Avoid dusty areas. Dust can cause harm to your eyes. So avoid exposure to the dusty areas.
  • Do not touch eyes frequently: Do not touch eyes after shaking hands with someone. Contact lenses should be worn and taken out in clean hands only. Disinfect your contact lenses as suggested.
  • Avoid smoking, direct or passive for eyesight improvementLike many other health problems, smoking is bad for your eyes also. It can increase your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, leading to blindness.
