Basic Steps to formatting your research paper in Chicago Style - 2022 Guide

Formatting a document can be a daunting task for a new essay writer. Formatting is a way of organizing a document to make it look presentable to the reader. There are multiple styles to choose from when editing a document. Chicago referencing style is utilized most significantly in novels, books, and research papers. The intext and out text citations are labeled by numbers and if the author is cited multiple times a new number is utilized to cite the author. The bibliography in Chicago style is also mentioned in the footnotes on every page of the paper therefore, a separate page for bibliography can be avoided.  The following tips have always been useful for me whenever I write my essay in Word document in Chicago format.

Step 1: Set the margins

The first step in formatting a document is to set the margins, with the document open, first go to layout, then on the Margins dropdown menu, select “Normal” for 1-inch margins on all sides, Top, bottom, left, and right.

Step 2: Alignment and Line spacing

The next step would be to align the document and set a document line spacing. Set alignment and line spacing by clicking on the home tab, then in the Paragraph grouping, select Align Left. Move your cursor over to the spacing tool’s dropdown menu and select 2.0 for double spacing.

Step 3: Insert Indentations

In a Chicago style, the first line of each paragraph needs to be indented by the essay writer. To set indentation for the first line of each paragraph, click on the paragraph dialog box launcher arrow. In the box that appears, under “Special” select First Line and make sure the number is 0.5 or half an inch.

Step 4: Select the Font

While formatting the font and point size, it’s recommended you use Times New Roman, 12-point type. So, click on Home and make those selections.

Step 5: Insert title page

Chicago-style papers may or may not have a title page, depending upon the instructions you were given. If a title page is required, center the title of your paper about one-third down the page. Then about 8 lines below that, center your name, class information, date, or whatever information your instructions specify. This information block should be double-spaced.

Step 6: Insert header and footer

After entering this information, go up to the Layout tab, then click on the Breaks drop-down arrow. Under Section breaks, select Next Page. You will now be taken to the first body page of your paper. Double left-click or Command-click on a Mac in the header area to open it up. Then go to the Navigation pane of the Header & Footer tab

and click on “Link to Previous” to delink this body page from the title page.

Step 7: Insert page numbers

Next, go to the Insert tab and click on the Page Number dropdown arrow. Select “Format Page Numbers.” In the dialog box that appears, under “Page Numbering” click the radio button “Start at” and enter the number 1. Click OK. Now on the page number dropdown arrow again, this time select “Top of Page,” Plain Number 3. This will place the number 1 in the top right corner, and now Word will number all pages of your document consecutively beginning with this page. Step 8: Insert your title

Insert the title of your research paper or essay at the center of the title page.

Step 9: Inserting citations

The easiest way to insert Chicago-style citations is to use a citation app that contains multiple citation styles, for instance, Zotero or endnote. But if not, the word works just fine. use word’s footnote tool. The default for the superscript number and footnote text is 10-point Calibri. Now, if you wish to change it to 12-point Times New Roman to match the rest of your paper, go to the Styles group and click on the dialog box launcher arrow. This essay writing service uses these steps for Chicago styling. Then select the Manage Styles option. In the Manage Styles dialog box that appears, select Alphabetical for Sort Order. Now, scroll to Footnote Reference, which refers to the superscript number. Select Footnote Reference and click on Modify. Now change the settings to Times New Roman 12-point or whatever you have been instructed to use. Then click OK. Simply repeat this process for Footnote Text. Now that your styles are set, to add a footnote, simply place the cursor at the end of a sentence where you wish the citation to appear. The cursor should be blinking after all punctuation.

Then click on References. In the Style selection window, choose Chicago.

Step 10: Insert footnotes

To insert footnotes, click on the Footnotes dialog box launcher arrow. In the dialog box, first choose Footnotes and their location: Bottom of page. Under Format, be sure Arabic numerals are selected. They should start at 1 and be continuous throughout the paper. The number 1 will appear in superscript at the end of the sentence. And, at the bottom of the page will be an area where you enter the footnote information. Repeat this process for adding all of your footnote citations. Word will automatically adjust the spacing of the page to accommodate.

By following the above-mentioned steps the daunting task of editing and formatting a document would no longer exist. If you are still not clear on the instructions then you should seek help from a professional essay writing service who would be able to format your entire document in Chicago style and make the document look very professional and ready to be graded.
