19-year-old Sanjita has two daughters, 4-year-old Anshu and 13-day-old Ankita. Sanjita has just returned home after going to her mother’s house to give birth to her second daughter. The baby is just 13 days old, but her future is looking bright. Four years ago when Sanjita gave birth for the first time, she didn’t know how to look after a child. She didn’t know what to feed her and as a result Anshu was severely malnourished.

Ahmeet, a World Vision staff working in Sanjitha’s village identifiedAnshu’s health problems and convinced Sanjita to take her to the nutrition rehabilitation centre. The centre is far away and normally means being admitted for two weeks. Sanjita says it was hard to leave her family for that long, but World Vision supported her and encouraged her to go.
Hundreds of babies are referred to the centres every month. The centres are government run, but most of the referrals come from World Vision staff working in the field.
Once there babies are fed a nutritious and energy rich blend of peanuts, coconut oil and milk powder. And their mothers are given information about what to feed them in the future to keep them healthy. After they leave they’re given a food basket, including rice and oil and other supplies to last them six months.
Sanjita says the experience was invaluable. She says she didn’t even know what malnourishment was before she went, and now she feels confident her new baby won’t suffer the same problems. She’s also proud to be able to share her knowledge with friends and neighbours who have new babies. Now she doesn’t have to worry so much about her daughters’ health she’s free to focus on their education instead. She’s hoping at least one of them grows up to be a doctor!

25-year-old Priyanka is first girl from the village to attend college and the first nurse and female government employee from her village.
A couple of years ago, life in the village was difficult and without any prospect especially for girls like Priyanka. There was just one Upper Primary School (up to 8th standard) in the village. Most children dropped out of school after 8th standard and began working fulltime in the fields. Before World Vision India’s intervention in 1999, children were victims of child marriage. Priyanka’selder sister was married off when she was 15 years old and Priyanka was to follow suit.
