How does a water softener work?

Water softeners work using the process of ion exchange. The process eliminates impurities in hard water.

Often the hard water enters into the mineral tank and then flows through the resin bed. The are charged with sodium ion and have a negative charge. On the other hand, calcium and magnesium minerals carry a positive charge. This attracts the negative charge and transfers positive charge of the beads. When the beads seizes the minerals, the sodium ion is released. The same strips all the hardness of the water as it passes through the mineral tank.

There are three components of water softener -

  • Control panel or valve
  • Brine tank
  • Mineral tank

These work in conjunction to remove minerals from the hard water and monitor the flow of water.
