All You Need To Know About The Fall Trigger Watch For The Elderly

Fall trigger watches can be used by patients from all age categories because conditions like sleep attack narcolepsy are not restricted to any age group. Nevertheless, aged individuals living alone with a history of risky medical conditions are certainly the prime users of this medical gadget. In this post, we will introduce and explain everything that there is to know about the fall detector watch.

What is a Fall Trigger Watch?

The fall detector watch is an advanced medical smartwatch which triggers an alarm as soon as the person wearing it falls. In addition to alerting anyone around with sound, the watch will also send alerts to:

1. The telecare centre with which it is synchronized.

2. The family/friends/contacts listed in the watch’s system as emergency contacts.

How Does a Fall Trigger Watch Work?

A lot depends on which watch we are discussing as the technology can and will differ depending on factors such as model, make, purpose, and release date. It should be noted that newer medical fall detection devices use more advanced technology to serve the functions that they do. So, never buy something that’s already outdated since it can very well turn out to make the difference between life and death.

Nevertheless, if we were to point out certain general principles of functioning, they would be as follows:

· The watch will have an advanced and highly sensitive accelerometer.

· The accelerometer will use radio waves to constantly monitor the wearer’s movements.

· The watch will have preprogramed and learned data it needs to compare the wearer’s movements with what is and what isn’t normal.

· The same data will allow the watch to detect if the wearer has fallen.

· On detecting the fall patterns from its accelerometer, a fall detection watch will trigger multiple alarms.

· It will emit a noise to alert those in the wearer’s vicinity and send remote alerts to all connected parties.

· The connected parties will vary, but most fall trigger watches are programmed to alert emergency services and contacts.

Who is a Fall Trigger Watch Meant For?

A fall trigger watch is meant to be used by anyone at medical risk and not just the elderly. However, since older individuals are at significantly higher risk of suffering from heart attacks, strokes, accidental falls, and syncope among several other possible medical conditions, it is this group that finds fall detection watches to be of the most use.

Although the list is by no means comprehensive, below you will find several risky conditions which may warrant the wearing a of fall trigger watch.

  • Narcolepsy or any other condition that may lead to sudden loss of consciousness.
  • Diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure) and hypotension (low blood pressure).
  • History or diagnosed vulnerability to cerebral strokes.
  • History or diagnosed vulnerability to heart disease, cardiac arrest, or heart attacks.
  • Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, etc.
  • Any condition that may lead to profound neuromuscular weakness and mobility issues.
  • Any condition that may lead to loss of balance, and/or loss of coordination.
  • Partial/local/semi paralysis.
  • People who are living alone and who have reached the age of 65.

Does the Patient Need to Push a Button?

Let’s consider a few scenarios where pressing a button would not be an option:

·        Cerebral strokes may paralyse the person or leave them in a fugue state.

·        If the person slips, falls and breaks multiple bones, they may not be able to move.

·        If the person falls and ends up injuring their spine, they may not be able to move.

·        If the person falls unconscious, they cannot press a button.

·        If the person falls, bumps their head, and then falls unconscious, they are likely to bleed out soon without help.

As we can clearly see from the above examples, pressing a button in an emergency is not an option in some scenarios, especially when the situation is serious. Therefore, any modern, technologically advanced fall detection watch will not depend on the patient’s ability to press a button.

However, the watch may have a button that can stop the alerts in case it has malfunctioned or is not reacting to an emergency. Not every fall is an emergency, so that option should be there so that the patient can stop the alerts when they are not in need of immediate and urgent care.
