How To Pair Halloween Costume Materials With The Right Thread

When it comes to utilising specialty materials and fabrics in your animal costumes, you should keep in mind that the thread you are using should be compatible with the fabric. Your choice of thread will highly differ between sewing through sheer organza or thick leather so we are here to help you find the right threads for the job. Whether you are making your costume or buying a costume, you should determine the quality by checking on the thread and fabric compatibility.

Pleather and leather material

This is a thick material and it is a must for any tool belt, leather armour look or scabbard. Both fake leather and leather, come in similar finishes and thicknesses so you can apply the same techniques and thread when sewing with it.

Since this material is thicker than standard fabrics, you will want to use a suitable thread. It comes in 30wt, 40wt, and 60wt options. You will, therefore, want to use 60wt in the bobbing and the lighter weight is a good option for when you do not want the thread to show as much. The standard weight as a top sewing thread is 40wt while the 30wt is considered to be a good option for top stitching. This is when you want the thread to stand out as a decorative element on its own.

When you buy costumes online, this is a great thread you can use to assemble leather clothing or armour pieces because it is very strong. This means that it will hold the thick leather pieces together securely. It is also good for sewing purses, backpacks, bags or other types of leather accessories that will need to endure increased wear and tear.

Fur and Faux Fur

You should bear in mind that real fur has leather backing while faux fur has a thicker fabric backing. For both of these materials, you will need Home Dec thread because the material is thick. In both cases, the hairs will run a certain direction. But the faux fur will need to be brushed to keep the hairs in proper alignment before sewing.

You should keep the grain in mind if you want to understand the direction the fur will fall in when you attach it to your Halloween costume. If it is falling against the nap, the hairs of the fur will stick up and will not look smooth.

Chiffon, Tulle, Organza and other types of sheer fabrics

You do not want to use regular sewing threads with these types of fabrics because the thread will show up and add a lot of bulk to the lightweight fabric. When sewing with sheer materials, it is recommended to go small with the thread.

If your animal costumes are made of the above materials, you should consider using a 100wt cotton-polyester thread. This thread is fine and it will blend with your material. It is a great option for blind hems, rolled hems and wherever you do not want the threads to show up.
