HOW TO DRESS WELL: THE 3 RULES EVERY MAN SHOULD KNOW

There are already too many rules in life. Some, on the other hand, are there to assist. Like the rules governing proper attire. Of course, every man or woman who has a viewpoint on such things that matter is talking from personal experience – and what works with one person often does not work for the other; or what works with one person is considered too pedestrian or too avant-garde by another. As a consequence, when it comes to dressing, they must always be taken at face value. They are suggestions rather than the final answer on style.

But good advice is never to be rejected, and as menswear becomes more rich and varied, more experimental and abundant, more pattern, having a useful fall-back position that cuts through the unnecessary stuff can help in moments of confusion and self-doubt.

These 'rules' are generally rooted in history – if they've worked for generations, they're likely to be working well today as well. And they are often founded on the obvious, that is often overlooked: a preference for a good fit, high quality, versatility, good value, avoiding extremes, and staying sober.

There are almost certainly many more rules than those presented here. Most of these you may well have discovered on your own. After all, trying on new clothes, see if they suit you, and feeling how they make you feel is part of the fun of shopping. However, these rules have stood the test of time and, when combined, serve as a failsafe guide on how to dress well today.

1. WEAR YOUR SUIT PROPERLY

Fit is the best way to make a suit look good. According to Davide Taub, head of bespoke suits at Savile Row tailor Gieves & Hawkes, if you're buying off-the-peg, focus just on fit across the shoulders because getting the chest and waist altered is a reasonably simple job. "Be careful about wearing a period suit unless you're heading for a total period look because the outfit starts to look like a novelty in solitude," he adds. Classic is the best and most practical – dark, two-button, single-breasted, with moderate details. "It's not dull. A suit is a type of uniform. The idea is to think of this suit as a blank canvas on which to build various ideas of individuality. It's just how you wear it, not the label inside, that makes an impression."

2. CHOOSE YOUR WATCH CAREFULLY.

"A watch is like a piece of artwork," says Don Cochrane, managing director of Vertex, a British watch brand. "Select it because you enjoy it, not because you think it will make money." Watches are symbolic of your passage through time. But you should also be practical." Aesthetic, functional, and rugged sports models go with everything and can withstand the rigours of everyday wear. However, a watch must still fit you. It should feel comfortable and be the right size and depth for your wrist – 40mm is considered the 'Goldilocks' size.

3. DO NOT BE AFRAID OF COLOR

Indulge in a splash of colour, whether on casual or formal wear. "Most men are unjustly frightened of it – anything that isn't navy or grey intimidates them," says menswear designer Oliver Spencer. "However, colour can be timeless too though," Spencer recommends pinks, greens, mustard, and brighter shades of blue as especially versatile year-round shades that will lift your entire outfit. However, when it comes to colour, he believes that less is more: "You only need a smidgeon of it in one garment."
