They can be seen at murder scenes, robbery sites, sexual assault investigations, suicide cases, child abuse cases, and more.


The use of photography in criminal investigations is a relatively new phenomenon. In 1839, Louis Daguerre developed the daguerreotype which was a breakthrough in photography that made it possible to capture images on metal plates. The first recorded use of photography as part of a criminal investigation took place in 1843 when Scotland Yard used Francis Frith’s photographs to solve a murder case.


A crime scene photographer is a professional who assesses a situation for clues and gathers evidence for use by law enforcement in the prosecution of a criminal. Their remit may be widened to include private detective work, missing persons investigations, and gathering surveillance images.
