This article discusses the use of vanillin as a building block in the chemical industry. Vanillin is currently one of the few molecular phenolic compounds that can be produced on a large scale from biomass. It has the potential to become a key intermediate in the synthesis of bio-based polymers, which require aromatic monomers to achieve good thermo-mechanical properties. Following a discussion of current vanillin sourcing, this article focuses on the alkaline oxidation lignin-to-vanillin process, reporting advantages and limitations, discussing the various postdepolymerization methods for product isolation, and finally examining the outlook for vanillin's wider use as a key building block for the chemical industry. manufacturing methods, and novel applications are discussed in this article. Its detection in the air is also introduced. manufacturing methods, and novel applications are discussed in this article. Its detection in the air is also introduced.
