What makes a Winery in Mornington Peninsula get Halliday Five Red Star Rating?

In Australia, there are almost 6000 vineyards, 2599 wineries, and 1600 cellars doors to consider while choosing a bottle of wine. Out of these, the Mornington Peninsula region in Victoria is home to many award-winning wineries. When selecting a winery in Mornington Peninsula, check for its Halliday Ratings. Fortunately, we at Montalto have proudly received the Halliday Five Red Stars for our Winery in Mornington Peninsula. Let us see how we achieved this ranking through a complete guide on ratings of the finest Australian wine by Halliday Wine Companion. The expert tasting panel follows a rigorous method to rate wine and wineries. Surprisingly, they taste over 9,000 wines every year and assess each individual aspect of wine before calling a score.

The Expert Tasting Panel ratings are explained as follows:

5 Star Red: The highest possible rating indicates that the winery produces exceptional quality wines; have maintained a 5 Star rating for the last two years, and have at least two wines that rate above 95 points.

5 Stars: The 5 Star rating is presented to an outstanding winery producing high-quality wine, and; 2 wines from this winery have reached a rate of 95 or above.

4.5 Stars: This ranking goes to excellent wineries producing high-quality wine; have at least 1 wine that rates on or above 95 points, and; 2 wines rated 90 or above.

4 Stars: The 4 Stars rating is for wineries producing good quality wine and having at least 1 wine that rates on or above 90 points.

3 Stars: This ranking represents a good winery producing wines scoring 86-89 points.

NR: No rating, which means the tasting panel could not run testing on that winery as they are too new to taste, or the wineries have scored below 88 points.

Wineries in Australia look forward to that time of year when the latest Wine Companion results come out. Our team at Montalto waited patiently to know that we succeeded in retaining the 5 Star Red Rating. Solidifying a place in the top 4% of wineries in Australia was a thrilling experience for the Montalto team. This clearly demonstrates that we are persistent in making outstanding wines of exemplary quality and typicity.

Here, at the winery in Mornington Peninsula, the many regional variations and atmospheric conditions draw added attraction to the Mornington Peninsula style. Usually, it is believed that areas around Red Hill and Main Ridge make more exquisitely structured Pinot Noir as the soils in these regions are more fertile.

As an award-winning winemaker, Simon Black explains, “Montalto wines are like an orchestra, where all the musicians come together and make a multi yard symphony.” The hallmark quality wines are prepared from the best-in-class grapes from our vineyards across the Peninsula.

We also have a Wine Club for you to enjoy premium quality wines. We can also take you for a guided tour behind locked doors, of our 75-acre estate kitchen garden in Red Hill. Visit our website to get directions or call us on +61 3 5989 8412 to know more about our winery in Mornington Peninsula.
