High precision coordinate measuring machine

Measurement systems have undergone substantial improvements to meet the fluctuating market demands. This rapid change and development in measurement technology have been driven primarily by demands for accuracy and precision from the aerospace, automotive, and other manufacturing industries.

Available with various technologies and configurations, the Coordinate Measurement system has been efficiently meeting the demands of the clients for more than a decade. Although existing CMMs can largely meet customers' rapid and increased demands, there is still a lot of room for improvement and development in CMMs.

The globalization of manufacturing has resulted in the development of a variety of complex products and the miniaturization of mechanical components. The technology of micro/nano-scale 3D measurement is still a hitch for many industries. Therefore, precise systems that are flexible enough to deal with the parts and complexities of micro and nano range products should be investigated.

An optical CMM, similar to optical measurement equipment and measuring microscope, is a non-contact device that uses images to make measurements.

Optical CMM is also known as CNC Image Measurement Machine, where "CNC" is the abbreviation for Computer Numerical Control. As the name suggests, these machines use image processing technology to make automatic measurements that are both fast and highly accurate. As factory automation continues to advance on construction sites, so has the rapid development of these measuring instruments.

Optical CMMs are highly valued not only for their highly accurate measurements but also for their ability to check for faulty parts on manufacturing lines. Recent technology uses highly accurate CCD cameras to empower the inspection of color images. Meanwhile, the development of related software has made it possible to perform various edge detection and support complex calculations.

How to use an Optical CMM?

* Place the measurement target in the metrology laboratory for at least 5 hours prior to measurement to allow it to adjust to room temperature (typically 68°F). This will prevent errors due to thermal expansion.

*   Place the target on the stage, and scan to capture the image that will be used to detect the edges.

*   Some models can also perform assisted measurement using laser light or touch probes.

*   The measured values can then be output as a variety of CAD data.
