The 3 most important things to keep track of as a new pianist

The 3 most important things to keep track of as a new pianist (Piano teacher Singapore)

You've seen the fast fingers dancing like magic on the keys. The piano's best pieces ooze excess and class, and it may be the instrument you dream of playing. We help you here to get a handle on the piano with our best advice for beginners

It can be almost scary to start playing the piano. The legacy of great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven weighs heavily on our common musical consciousness, and it is doubtful whether others will ever reach those heights.

But don’t let the story scare you away. If you have the desire and the talent, there is every chance that you can become a brilliant pianist. However, there are some very basic things you need to know before you plunge into the world of the piano.

A piano with weighted keys

When you start practicing piano playing, it is very important that you can do it on a piano with weighted keys.

It can be either a grand piano or a keyboard. But this means that the tangents have resistance in them, i.e., that it feels as if they are heavy when you play on them. It's the only way you can get the right piano feel in your fingers, just like on a real piano. It helps you develop the right technique for the rest of your life as a pianist.

Additionally, there must be a sustain pedal along with the piano. It's a pedal you can step on so the piano holds your notes. On a regular piano, it allows the strings to vibrate freely, while a keyboard does so electronically.

It helps to give your piano playing a special dimension.

This is how the notes on the piano work

A piano is quite logically arranged. You have all the notes on the piano in front of you in the form of the various keys.

If you go once to the left, you go one note down so you play deeper. And if you move a key to the right of the piano, you go up a note and play a lighter note.

From left to right, the white keys have the names C - D - E - F - G - A - H. When we name the black keys on the piano, it's a little harder to figure out.

The names of the black keys come from the white tone to which they apply. That is why the black keys have two names. They are basically called the tone of the white pliers plus a suffix. That suffix can be ice, ace, s or b and gives names like Cis, Des or Fis.

When you reach the H tone on a series of keys, the next key is again a C. However, the C is one octave higher than the previous C.

Once you have mastered that sequence, you can start learning chords on the piano.

Start quietly

Maybe you want to be the next Mozart. Or maybe you want to be the wildest jazz pianist. But you are not, as soon as you sit down at the piano.

Of course, you need to be inspired and do your best to become as good - or better - than your big idols. However, it trains to reach them.

It is important that you start with small steps and practice continuously when you are a beginner. You need to start with the basic chords and then find an easy song that you can successfully learn. It could be something as silly as little Peter's spider or something else that gets you off to a good start.

Additionally, be sure to start by practicing only your right hand on the piano (unless you are left-handed. Then it is perfectly OK for you to use it). You must make sure that you have total control over the movements that your hands and fingers must store in your muscle memory.

In a way, it's a bit like learning to type properly on a computer keyboard. Your fingers just need to learn to position themselves properly before you can set the pace and bring your left hand into play. (Music school Singapore)

You can do this when your right hand is in complete control of playing a song. Then you can learn the same song with your left hand, and then you can start combining both hands.

With the right piano, mastery of the notes and the right practice, you are quickly on your way to mastering the piano.
