A port or harbor is an area of water on the coast in which boats, ships, and water vessels of all kinds can ‘moor’, ‘dock’, or ‘berth’ - all words meaning to come into harbor and tie the ship safely to the shore. A harbor might also be called a marina, a waterfront, or a port, and although there are slight differences between these terms it’s essentially this, and can be easily recognised by the number of boats, barges, yachts, and so on, both settled and setting off from there.
However, a port or harbor also contains types of boats and vehicles which are less familiar to most of us. Here are some of the most interesting of those, if only for the reason of idle education and so you can impress your colleagues and acquaintances on your next trip by ship or even whilst drinking coffee as you overlook one of these watery enclaves.
Pontoon
A pontoon is a boat which uses airtight tubes to make it buoyant. These tubes are capable of supporting a larger deck than usual, which makes this type of boat good for ferrying passengers, use as a houseboat, or for supporting attractions such as event spaces and bars. Another type of pontoon is a catamaran, which uses its airtight tubes to make it light and speedy. Seaplanes are a type of pontoon, also.
Straddle Carrier
Whilst not a boat, this vehicle can be seen in most large harbors and is a necessity for commercial ships carrying heavy cargo. It is a crane-like construct used to move and stack up storage containers.
RoRo
‘RoRo’ stands for ‘Roll On, Roll Off’. It’s a kind of ship that can carry anything which, as the name suggests, can roll on and back off again - cars, buses, lorries, tractors, and so on. Any kind of vehicle, basically. ‘RoRo’ may sound cute, but these carriers can be HUGE!
Fishing Boats
It might seem like one of the most common types of boats in a harbor, but can you actually identify a fishing boat? Many can be recognised by the fishing lines that adorn the boat itself. This sort of boat might typically be a ‘pole and line’ vessel, but in fact there are many types of fishing boat, including dredgers, which literally dredge aquatic creatures the sea or river bed, and trollers, which contain many, many lines for catching large batches of fish.
Impress others with this new knowledge, now, and enjoy your time by the shore next time you are in harbor. With so much coastline in this land of ours, that is certain to be sometime very soon.
