The Different Kinds Of Careers In Healthcare

Choosing a career can be a challenging undertaking. There are factors like job satisfaction, salary, and advancement opportunities, among others.

However, if you have a compassionate temperament and a passion for STEM topics, why not consider a career in medicine? There are several positions available, and not all of them require eight or more years of university education.

Many of the jobs available in this area are very satisfying, well-paying, and offer plenty of opportunities for advancement. Check out the top careers in healthcare below:

1. Doctor

Doctors are highly trained medical professionals who specialise in one or more areas of medicine, such as surgery, emergency medicine, or general practice. They have the highest clinical authority in a healthcare setting and are in charge of diagnosing and treating sick patients.

To practice medicine, you must be admitted into - and successfully graduate - medical school, which typically takes four to eight years. There is extra training depending on your selected specialisation.

Johns Hopkins University, the University of Oxford, and the Karolinska Institute are among the top medical schools in the world.

2. Nurse

If doctors are the clinical leaders, nurses are the backbone of the entire global healthcare system, providing patients with care and treatment. They, like doctors, tend to specialise in a specific field, such as emergency medicine or paediatrics.

Although nursing degrees are still vocational in certain countries, the profession has become more professional in recent years. In the United Kingdom, for example, nurses must now have a recognised nursing undergraduate degree in order to be registered.

In the United States, you must have at least an associate's degree on your resume. King's College London, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Toronto are among the top nursing schools.

3. Chiropractors

Chiropractors may treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain, neck pain and headache through manual therapies such as manipulation and massage. Chiropractors also offer movement-related ergonomic and lifestyle counselling, with a focus on wellness and prevention.

What qualifications do chiropractors have?

Chiropractors complete a minimum of five years of university education and register with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency. This includes the following:

  • completion of a three-year bachelor's degree program followed by a master's degree or a double degree program in chiropractic science and clinical science bachelor's, master's, or professional doctorate program
  • ongoing professional development
  • meet the Chiropractic Board of Australia's national regulation requirements for the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency.

To end…

The qualifications required for these professions vary, but they come from a variety of backgrounds, and healthcare practitioners can work in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings, such as schools or private clinics.

As you can see, there is something for everyone in the healthcare industry - and these roles are just a few! There are several administrative and logistical roles available, such as medical coding or couriering, as well as a range of scientific careers that are directly related to healthcare.
