How to Conclude an Economics Paper

Writing an economics paper has three distinct stages. The author starts with an introduction, where they tell the reader what the essay will discuss. Then, the writer proceeds to the body of the piece. Here, the author tells the audience what they had said they would tell them. It is the meaty part of the paper. Finally comes the conclusion, where the writer reminds the reader that they have told them. If you are studying economics in college, for example, knowing how to conclude an economics paper is paramount.

The reason you need to how to write economics paper is that so much is at stake. It is your last opportunity to persuade the reader to your point of view. It is the last chance you have to impress your professor as an erudite writer and a clear thinker. It is what your economics professor reads last. How you conclude your economics paper will shape the impression that stays with the professor, even as they grade your paper.

The end of your paper should convey a sense of completeness and closure. Also, it ought to communicate a sense of other possibilities of the topic, the topic's broader meaning as well as its implications. You must ensure your last paragraph effectively closes the discussion without closing it off. But how do you create that sense of closure? Here is what to do:

Conclude your economics paper by linking the introduction to the final paragraph. To do this, you can reiterate a phrase or a word you had used in the beginning. Another way to do it is to use simple language to write your conclusion. One-syllable words are preferable. You can also choose to create a sense of balance and order by writing a compound sentence that maintains the rhythm of your paper, especially where the discussion is complex.

Think of the implications of your analysis or discussion. Ask yourself: what does my argument imply or suggest? State the implications as succinctly as you can. Another technique that helps you conclude your paper like a real academic writer is redefining a fundamental term of your argument.

For example, you might begin an economics paper on Carl Marx's views on the antagonism between wage labour and capital this way: the "capitalist economy is……a gigantic enterprise of dehumanisation." But when concluding the economics paper, you might suggest that the analysis of Marx is dehumanising as it presents every reality in economic terms rather than ethical or moral terms.

When writing a short paper, there is no need to summarise your main points. A restatement of the main ideas could be necessary if your paper is ten pages or longer, though.

You should avoid some common phrases students frequently include in their conclusions. Avoid phrases such as "in conclusion", "to conclude", and "in summary" among others. Do not be labour the obvious, or you will end up irritating the reader. Your audience can usually tell when the paper is approaching the end.

Use these tips as a simple guide when concluding your economics paper. A well-written essay compels your professor to award you the grade you deserve.
