A Li-Air Battery is an Electrochemical Cell or Battery Chemistry that uses Metals and Air

The lithium-air battery (Li-air) is a metal-air electrochemical cell or battery chemistry that induces current flow by oxidising lithium at the anode and reducing oxygen at the cathode.

In theory, Li-Air Battery are an extremely appealing alternative for affordable, efficient energy storage for electric vehicles. However, as researchers investigate this technology, they face numerous critical challenges. If researchers can overcome these obstacles, there is a good chance that the lithium-air battery will outperform today's lithium-ion battery in terms of energy density.

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, Berkeley believe they have part of the solution to this critical challenge, which could propel the lithium-air battery's practicality. The team, which included researchers from Bryan McCloskey and Vent Viswanathan's laboratories, discovered a way to increase the capacity of the lithium-air battery while preserving its recharge ability by blending different types within the battery's electrolytes.
