Autonomous Navigation Systems – Introduction, Development and Market Forecast

What is autonomous navigation?

An autonomous navigation system, or ANS, is an integrated suite of sensors and technology that enables a vehicle to navigate and perform path-planning capabilities without human intervention. An autonomous navigation robot can maintain stability while moving on rough terrain as well as plan its movement using data from its different sensors. This technology has a wide range of applications, including driverless cars, humanoid robots, assistive systems, domestic systems, military systems, manipulator systems, and so on. Apart from specialised applications, it has domestic applications also. Its application to autonomous wheelchair systems, autonomous walkers, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, and other devices is being researched and developed.

Autonomous navigation systems equipped with equipment rely on data obtained from their surroundings, such as static object position, speed or acceleration of peers or other moving objects in its vicinity, air pressure, and so on, and can be reviewed using Light Imaging Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and a laser and vision-based imaging system, such as a camera.

The Autonomous Car Navigation System

One of the most popular applications of autonomous navigation systems these days is in cars. Many companies have successfully demonstrated their technology. One of the popular names is Tesla. Apple is also developing its autonomous navigation car with the code name "Titan". Cruise's team is combining self-driving vehicle technology with ride-share technology to provide riders with autonomous transportation options on demand, equipped with clean engineering to reduce fuel emissions. Waymo has designed a variety of autonomous navigation commuter vehicles and trucks in both personal and commercial spaces.

The Advantages of Autonomous Navigation in Cars

  1. USDOT has estimated that there will be a 90% reduction in road accidents.
  2. If there is less congestion on roads and vehicles move freely, there will be a 60% drop in harmful emissions.
  3. According to a study by Ohio University, US drivers waste 3.1 billion gallons of fuel annually. With this technology, this wastage can be controlled.
  4. There will be a substantial reduction in travel time.

Autonomous Navigation Drones

Drone technology has seen a great leap in its development and uses in recent times. It was developed for military and dangerous work, but its commercial development has given it a new perspective. Service drones have gained popularity during the pandemic and their demand is still growing. Some of the biggest companies like Amazon, UPS, and Alphabet are making advances toward drone delivery services.

Autonomous Navigation of Underwater Vehicles

Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing sectors within the food industry. To get the best product, it is necessary to monitor water quality and cage inspection, which were previously done manually. With autonomous underwater vehicles, this work can be done more efficiently and securely.

Apart from that, these vehicles are used for research work also. Scientists and researchers use AUVs to explore the sea. This costs less than manned underwater vehicles and is much safer. With an autonomous navigation system, AUVs can drive themselves easily and stay in the ocean for longer periods.

Market Prospect

Raytheon Intelligence & Space is working on a new radar system that is capable of quickly deconflicting airspace cluttered by commercial drones.

Airservices Australia selected Thales to carry out drone surveillance trials at Sydney airport.

As per Delvens’ market research report, the Global Autonomous Navigation Market is anticipated to reach USD 3.8 billion in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 17.2% during the forecasting period, 2021–2028.

Conclusion

With the technological development of self-driving cars, service drones, and unmanned underwater vehicles, autonomous navigation systems will become inevitable and their application will give a new rise in development. The market for this technology will grow in the coming future.
