The problem of TV motion blur explained (and why all 4K solutions fail)

For many years 4 K TV manufacturers have been trying to deal with a very common problem called “Motion Blur”. You may have noticed it or maybe not or you may be enjoying watching television in a delighted way, sorry for ruining your viewing experience, but there are many who face this side effect.

To remove this side effect we have numerous solutions like the soap opera effect, it makes the film's motion look buttery smooth. A lot of tv makers also used the combat motion blur technique which is associated with a 120Hz refresh rate. Motion smoothing techniques and high refresh rates are just in their infancy. As we mention above there are numerous anti-blurring technologies that can be found today which also include black frame insertion and LED backlight scanning.

There are pros and cons of each technology, it's up to you which technique makes your TV watching experience happier.

Why is TV motion getting blurred?

Motion blur defines as anything on a tv screen becoming fuzzy, less distinct or getting blurred, it can be an object or an entire screen. I always notice that in a close-up of a person’s face, and when he moves it's every eyelash and wrinkle, the next it’s a blurry mesh.

Sometimes this can be happened due to the low frame rate of a movie or a tv show, which can cause due to camera and for that you can’t do anything, but sometimes it can be caused due to your TV, yes it is true your TV can also cause blur effect and you can resolve it.

In early LCD and QLED, the culprits were the slow-speed motion of liquid crystal elements which are responsible for creating images. They hold the image up to one-sixtieth of a second so that the tv screen gets refreshed, In some other countries have faster refresh rates like they can hold the image up to one-fiftieth of a second, but the process is the same.

Today, TV has numerous solutions to get rid of motion blurs but none of them are quite satisfactory. Here are some pros and cons of the four most popular motion blur solutions.

1) High refresh rate whose frequency is beyond 120Hz

Tv manufacturers know this problem for many years and that’s why they used a high refresh rate, in early 4K TVs the refresh rate is about 120Hz but in the 1080p age, there are some models which can use a 240Hz refresh rate and above its depend on which country do you live. A higher refresh rate doesn’t fix the motion blur problem as it held the image for some time, but you actually don’t even notice it. As it is so fast beyond your brain.

2) A soap opera effect is caused by motion interpolation

The modern TV can be a surprising amount of accuracy. This can be explained in an example if a ball is put on the right side of frame A and a ball is put on the left side of frame B then the TV can be easily assumed that the ball is in the centre of frame A and frame B. A 120Hz Tv determines what this frame AB would look like and insert more frame between frames A and B. This means that there are more frames between frames A and B which took less time to hold the frame and switch to the next frame very quickly. With sports or reality videos, a new frame is inserted between every original frame which results get less motion blur and HD resolution. But it creates a problem with scripted content or non-reality content, as Hollywood and others still recorded their tv shows at the rate of 24 fps(Frame per second). Interpolating frame increases the frame rate so that 24 fps content doesn’t look like 24 fps but looks like 30 fps or 60 fps, due to this it creates a soap opera effect which makes the motion ultra smooth and makes it artificial-looking.

Most TVs allow you to turn it off, as well as adjust how intense the frame interpolation is. But By putting 24fps content on a 60fps display, judder can be reduced.

3) Black Frame Insertion

Fortunately, there are some other techniques for those people who hate the soap opera effect and its name as black frame insertion. In this technique, a black frame is inserted in every original frame. Though filmed were not actually framed in 24 fps. This was actually shown slowly so that people can flicker, instead, each frame was shown 3 times. Adding blanks to the film was a simple strategy to give the look and feel of higher frame rates without the additional cost of additional stock. With the black frame insertion, it takes less time to hold and sample the frames so that it takes enough time to make your brain fool and think there’s smooth motion.

When the TV spend half of its time showing the black screen it actually drops out its light output drop, but it is considered because modern tv is exceptionally bright but in other cases, it is not considerable.

Another method uses a rolling or scanning backlight, which dims portions of the image sequentially. In the top quarter of the screen, the backlight might darken first, followed by the middle top, middle bottom and bottom quarter of the screen.

The black frame can also be categorized according to how “black” it is. TVs that operate at 120Hz may insert a duplicate frame but one that’s darker. It’s not black, just darker. However, this method has its drawbacks as well. There is not as much light loss, but perhaps the motion seems less sharp.

4) Know your TV Setting To Control Motion Blur

Many new TVs, especially mid-range and high-range TV, have some set which adjusts motion blur, if motion blur bothers you then you can simply find the the tv setting that works for you without disturbing your family.

As the latest technology comes day by day with the new solution and one day we resolve this problem completely, in Today era we developed lots of techniques to reduce this problem but we don’t have satisfactory results till now, but we are still working on it. As we used more and more HD technology, the more we get this problem.

Your TV is an incredibly important part of your home. If you are looking for a new TV with a little bit more budget then go for QLED TVs. QLED give you razor-sharp picture quality with the greatest contrast and colour. We will be sure that there are plenty more untapped uses of TV which yet not to be discovered by the public.
