Everything you should know about Telehealth

Telehealth and digital communication technologies offer and facilitate various health-related services, including medical treatment, education for patients and healthcare providers, health information services, and self-care. Examples of telehealth consultation include live videoconferencing, mobile applications, "save and forward" electronic transmissions, and remote patient monitoring (RPM).

Telemedicine and Telehealth

Many people use the phrase "telehealth" to refer to a broader range of digital healthcare activities and services than Telemedicine, which is commonly used interchangeably. To understand the relationship between Telemedicine and Telehealth, it is first necessary to define Telemedicine itself.

Is Telemedicine a form of medicine?

"The remote diagnosis and treatment of patients by use of telecommunications technology," as defined by Oxford, is what Telemedicine is. Using technology and telecommunication infrastructure, patients who are far from healthcare professionals can get care through a practice known as Telemedicine. The imaging findings of a patient in another county may be read and interpreted by a radiology specialist who is not currently on staff at the hospital. In a non-life-threatening emergency, a doctor can provide an urgent-care consultation through video.

Telecommunication technology is used in many aspects of healthcare, not just in medicine; Telemedicine, on the other hand, relates only to distant medical treatment. Telehealth consultation plays an essential role in taking care of patients who cannot reach a hospital or need emergency advice to cure. Education in healthcare and the use of wearable gadgets for vital sign monitoring or remote provider communication are a few examples of Telehealth.

Telemedicine is a new frontier in healthcare.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) and store and forward technologies are only a few examples of the various telehealth technologies now being used.

Health care delivered via mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets is known as "mHealth."

Hundreds of mHealth apps are available, including asthma and diabetes management programmes, weight reduction and smoking cessation apps, and more. Using these apps, users may monitor their health, set reminders for medication and appointments, and exchange information with their healthcare providers. As an additional benefit, mobile devices allow consumers to arrange meetings and contact healthcare practitioners through videoconference and text messaging.

Use of telemedicine tools such as HD cameras and high-resolution video conferencing

Patients in remote areas and those in prisons have long relied on video conferencing technology to get care. With real-time video communication tools, doctors make appointments available to patients who cannot travel. Telehealth Vancouver is also being used by providers of both treatment and funding, such as Kaiser Permanente (KP), the Defence Department (DOD), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Video scopes and high-resolution cameras are also being used to diagnose and treat convicts at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the State Corrections Department (SCDC). Aside from reducing transportation expenses and increasing security by keeping convicts inside and providers outside, they also conduct virtual appointments utilising video/audio communication software.

Patient Monitoring through the Internet (RPM)

Electronic equipment like wearables, mobile devices, smartphone apps, and internet-enabled laptops can monitor and report patients' health remotely. RPM systems prompt patients to take their weight and send the results to their doctors. Blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation are just a few of the vital sign measurements that may be captured and sent electronically via wearables and other devices.
