The Ultimate Guide to Corduroy Fabric and Its Processing

Do you know that there are many such fabrics in the textile industry whose names you might not know? Have you heard of corduroy fabric before?

Corduroy fabric in India is one of the popular fabrics in the textile industry. Here in this blog article, we will give you a clear idea about this fabric and its processing of this fabric.

What fabric is corduroy?

There is a wide variety of fabrics available in the textile industry; Corduroy is one of the most popular fabrics among them.

Corduroy is a twill weave fabric, which basically means that the threads are knitted with each other in diagonal lines with thick vertical ribs. Corduroy is a very tough and strong type of fabric that is generally notable for its uniqueness.

Most corduroy fabrics in the textile industry are made from cotton or cotton blends. In today's time, corduroy is usually made using 100% cotton and has very soft and easy touch.

What is corduroy fabric used for?

In ancient times, garment manufacturers commonly used corduroy fabric to make everything from workwear to soldiers' uniforms. This fabric is not as popular as it used to be, so the applications of corduroy have been limited.

Today, corduroy fabric is used exclusively for the production of both apparels as well as furniture products. This fabric is used for the manufacture of various apparel such as women's clothing, men's clothing, children's clothing, shirts, overshirts, and outerwear. Furniture, as well as accessory manufacturers commonly, use corduroy fabric to make a chair and sofa covers, as well as decorative cushions.

What is the processing of corduroy fabric?

The manufacturing process of corduroy fabric may vary depending on the material used. There are general steps to be followed to make corduroy fabric, its manufacturing process involves 4 steps. Let's take a look at the following process step-by-step;

·        WEAVING The first step in the corduroy manufacturing process involves intricate and distinctive weaving. Although most of this fabric has a plain weave, corduroy can be made using a twill weave, but this approach is not so common. The fabric also has a plain weave which is made of weft threads above and below the warp threads. After completing the weaving process, the makers mix the yarn of the pile with the weave.

·        GLUEING To prevent the pile thread from coming out of the fabric during the cutting process, glue is applied to the back of the woven fabric. Textile manufacturers remove this glue later in the production process.

·        PILE YARN CUTTING The uncut fabric is then transferred to the pile processing range. Manufacturers cut the yarn pile using an industrial cutter machine. Smooth rotary blades accurately cut loops in the fabric to detach the yarns of the stack. This yarn is then brushed and sung to create soft, uniform streaks.

·        DYEING & FINISHING To produce a unique, irregular pattern, fabric manufacturers can pigment-dye the finished corduroy fabric. The design created by the dyeing process becomes more prominent as the fabric is washed. One of the most attractive and pleasing aspects of corduroy fabric is provided by this step.

What are the types of corduroy fabric India?

There are a few different subtypes of corduroy. Let's have a look at the types of corduroy fabric.

·        STANDARD CORDUROY

Standard corduroy is one of the most popular corduroy fabrics. If a piece of corduroy fabric weighs between 8 and 13 inches per inch, it is generally considered standard corduroy.

·        PINWALE CORDUROY

Pinwale corduroy fabric is another popular type of corduroy. This type of corduroy has a large number of small ridges per square inch. The finest forms of pinwale corduroy can feature up to 21 wales per inch.

·        PIGMENT-DYED CORDUROY

Most types of corduroy fabric are pigment-dyed. This type of corduroy dyeing process results in a blotchy appearance that becomes more distinct with each wash.
