Nostalgia, 7 Best PlayStation Emulators for Android Phones

It is undeniable, PlayStation (PS) is one of the most popular console-based gaming industries in the world. Since breaking Nintendo's dominance in 1994 with the PSX, PS has been on the rise with the release of the PS2 in 2000 and competing in the handheld realm with the PSP in 2005.

As previously discussed, the Guinness World Record recorded the PS2 console as the best-selling console of all time by selling 155 million units. PS continues to innovate by releasing the PS3, PSVita, PS4, and finally the upcoming PS5.

Our childhood was accompanied by PS. With exciting games such as Final Fantasy , Metal Gear Solid , Tekken , Winning Eleven to Pepsi-Man , it's natural that we miss the old graphics a la consoles from time to time.

Unfortunately, if you miss PSX games , now it's a bit difficult to find games and console machines. However, thanks to the increasingly recent development of the internet, you can use your smartphone ( smartphone ) as a mini "PSX", by downloading an emulator .

Come on, get nostalgic with the old PSX graphics and games along with seven PS emulators ready to be downloaded on Android-based smartphones. You can download them at Techtoroms.

1. ePSXe

Ranked first, we recommend the ePSXe emulator for playing PSX  games on your Android smartphone . Not only is it stable and easy to use (with up to 99 percent compatibility!), this emulator from epsxe software sl has other features than others such as:

  • Split screen mode so you can play with your friends,
  • Savestate,
  • A virtual control panel that you can customize however you want,
  • supports external controllers (WiiMote, Sixaxis, up to XBOX 360), and
  • increased game graphics to HD by 2x/4x  rendered and two openGL renderers (by downloading the openGL plugin ).

The downside of the ePSXe is the price. Yes, to play this one application, it's not free. You have to pay Rp. 50 thousand, and there is no trial mode . However, with a 4.7/5 rating from the Play Store, we guarantee you won't be disappointed!

2. FPse

Sticking to the position of ePSXe, FPse is the  second best PS emulator for Android smartphones  . This app from Schtruck & LDchen boasts of high compatibility. Similar to ePSXe, FPse has basic emulator features such as:

  • Savestate,
  • 10 modifiable controls,
  • Supports VR glasses, and
  • Supports external controllers , from Wiimote to PS4.

FPse also has various advanced options, plugins , and extra features that make the gaming experience even better. Just like ePSXe, FPse can improve  game graphics with openGL 2.0 and load games to full screen.

Unfortunately, just like ePSXe, FPse is not free and is priced at Rp. 46 thousand, and does not have a trial mode . Also, you might need a little time to get used to the FPse controls. However, if you get used to it, this app with   4.6/5 rating on the Play Store will make you lose track of time!

3. PPSSPP

When Sony released the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2004, the Japanese entertainment company hoped the PSP would rival Nintendo in terms of handheld consoles . Starting off sweetly, the PSP's career ended in 2014 after looking "tired" of competing with increasingly modern consoles.

The PSP still attracts some fans with its games . To entertain the hearts of PSP fans, you can try to reminisce about PSP games on your Android smartphone by downloading PPSSPP, a special PSP emulator !

Although PPSSPP is not the only PSP emulator for Android, we can guarantee that PPSSPP is the best. In addition to compatibility, this emulator by Henrik Rydgård is very easy to use, just like a regular PSP, and its performance deserves thumbs up! PPSSPP's solid performance is supported by regular updates.

Unfortunately, some people are annoyed with ads that sometimes like to appear (not while playing games ). PPSSPP offers an ad-free version ( Gold ) for only Rp. 19 thousand!

4. RetroArch

4th place, RetroArch is one of the most downloaded PS emulators. Supporting multi-platform consoles , this application made by Libretro supports almost all gaming consoles .

In addition to its user-friendly appearance, RetroArch also regularly receives updates, so that its performance is always satisfactory. RetroArch features include:

  • openGL,
  • Support camera view from  other console platforms ,
  • location support,
  • modifiable controls,
  • Multilingual, and
  • Can capture the screen ( screenshot ),

You'll have to download each system individually in " Cores " to play the game on other console platforms , so it's a little tricky compared to the emulators on this list. Don't worry the core for PS is stable and steady to play.

If you're already familiar with RetroArch, there's no need to look for another emulator . Moreover, the application with a rating of 3.8/5 on the Play Store is also free! If it feels too slow, you can download the 64bit version of RetroArch which is also free (with a 4.3/5 rating).

5. ClassicBoy

If you have an Android smartphone with an old OS version, you can consider ClassicBoy, you know. Boasting itself as an all-in-one emulator , ClassicBoy can load more than just PS games .

As the name implies, this application made by PortableAndroid supports a variety of classic consoles, such as the PSX, three Game Boy variants ( Color [GBC] , Classic [GB] , and Advance [GBA] ), Nintendo 64 (N64), Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), SEGA Genesis , and SNK NeoGeo! Not only Tekken, you can also play Pokemon, you know.

There are also various features such as:

  • Support hardware  controller from MOGA controller  to PS3,
  • modifiable touch screen controls,
  • Audio settings, and
  • Savestate.

The only problem with ClassicBoy is its age. Released in 2013, PortableAndroid last provided an app upgrade with   3.7/5 rating in 2014. Therefore, we only recommend it for Android devices with older OS versions.

6.EmuBox

You want an application similar to ClassicBoy? EmuBox is the answer! Although not very popular, this emulator from EmuBox JSC is slick enough to load older console games . Similar to ClassicBoy, EmuBox supports  multi-platform consoles , including PSX, Nintendo DS (NDS), Super NES (SNES), GBA, GBC, and more.

EmuBox boasts a user-friendly interface that is pleasing to the eye. The features provided by EmuBox include:

  • Savestate,
  • Mode fast-forward,
  • Supports  external controllers , and
  • Screen capture ( screenshot ),

Also, compared to most emulators which only provide a few storage slots , EmuBox provides 20 storage slots for each ROM separately! So, no need to be afraid to enter a lot  of games .

To improve the experience of playing old console games , you can also change the emulator settings.

In addition to the advantages, the weakness of EmuBox is also the same as ClassicBoy, namely its age. Released in 2017, EmuBox was last updated in 2018. With  3.6/5 rating on Play Store, chances are, EmuBox is better installed for  older Android smartphones too.

7. Xebra

At the last place on this list, you can download Xebra as an emulator on your Android smartphone . Developed by (Dr. Hell), Xebra prides itself on being the " most accurate PSX Emulator ". Then, why did Xebra only get a 2.5/5 rating?

Please note, after downloading Xebra, you will see the complex controls. This is the weakness of Xebra, the interface between users is not friendly. After seeing it, most will immediately give a bad rating .

If you go to the " About this App " section, you'll find a link to a video tutorial using Xebra (we'll show you below). (Dr. Hell) explained that users have to watch the Xebra guide video to understand!

Because of his anger, (Dr.Hell) said that Xebra " cannot be handled by fools ".

In fact, if you spend some time getting used to Xebra, you'll get a vintage gaming experience unlike any other on this list! You will get accurate graphics and responsive virtual control layout.

Those are seven PS emulators for Android smartphones that you can download and play in your spare time. Each emulator has its own advantages and disadvantages.

From the easiest to play to the most challenging, which one would you like to download? Happy nostalgia!
