Right to abortion has been a subject of opposing views for decades. In the United States, several regions have restrictions on pregnancy termination, including states where there is a complete ban on the facility. Then there are regions, which have free access and relatively less stringent laws about the same. With time, laws have been updated, now as Roe v. Wade 1973 was overturned recently, abortion access and rights have been majorly affected.
Expected Changes in Abortion Services in the US
Legal repercussions are on the way with Roe v. Wade revoked. It is probable that half of the states may in some way or the other, pose restrictions on pregnancy termination reach to women. Out of 50, if half of the states run into pausing the services on reproductive care, then females will not be able to get abortion pills or invasive treatment for an unwanted pregnancy. And if a blanket ban comes into action, then the individual has to carry on with full-term pregnancy.
Here is how the general analysis of situations stands as:
· Ending a pregnancy could be illegal in some states, and in others, the same could be limited to permission if the pregnancy is within 6 weeks or 15 weeks of gestation.
· The changes in the law may come into view firstly in 13 states, where even before the decision by the Supreme Court, they were prepared with a framework of changes in place.
· The same can be seen in South Dakota, Missouri, Idaho, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas, Wyoming, Utah, Tennessee, and Louisiana.
· Thus, the final updates in the laws will depend on the state itself as to easing or making the laws stricter for pregnancy termination services.
As Roe v. Wade is stuck down, the states will soon implement their set of laws. For example, the attorney general of Arkansas only after authorizing the decision of the Supreme Court will trigger laws on abortion. Whereas, in Texas, we may see a complete ban on pregnancy termination. And this can happen quite soon.
What May Happen After Overriding of Roe. V Wade?
Some states may come up with parameters before allowing a person to obtain hospitalization for pregnancy termination or abortion pill prescription. These could be limited to the period till when the pregnancy ending is allowed, parental consent, pills from certified abortion providers, etc. Here is what may happen:
· 26 states may ban abortion altogether. The regions from the Southwest and Midwest are among these. And women here will have to visit nearby states where the procedure is legal.
· Women will be able to buy abortion pills probably on West Coast and Northeast such as Washington, California, Nevada, and Oregon.
· It can be legalized even in Southwest and Midwest regions such as Minnesota, New Mexico, Kansas, and Illinois.
· Then there are states that may have legislation in place to offer safe access to abortion care. These include New Jersey, Colorado, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maryland.
To Conclude
To date, 32 states have laws that allow healthcare providers to give abortion pills to women. Texas, Missouri, and 4 other states have no facility for telemedicine. Some permit the pills only at medical centers, while at others, it is possible to get the medication via the mail, internet, or in-person visit at a clinic.
