Golden Fort Jaisalmer Travel Package – Veena World

The historic city of Jaisalmer (pop. 78,000) in Rajasthan state's Thar Desert is renowned as India's "Golden City" because the yellow sandstone from which its old quarter was built (mainly in the 12th century) imbues it with a tawny lion colour during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets.

It's also known for its gorgeous temples of the Jain sect, which is one of the world's oldest. But Jaisalmer's major claim to fame is Jaisalmer Fort, popularly known as the Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) due to its construction in the same tawny sandstone. It is one of the world's largest forts, measuring 1,500 feet long and 750 feet broad, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Hill Forts of Rajasthan." It is perched on a 250-foot-high hill about 1.5 kilometres from the major railway station.

The Bhati Rajput clan monarch Maharawal Jaisal Singh, who also founded the city named after him, built Jaisalmer Fort atop Trikuta Hill in 1156 AD. Originally, the whole population of the city lived within its walls, and it also served as a sanctuary and way-station for caravans and travellers travelling along the Silk Road. The fort's history, structure, stories, and splendour make it the top destination in the Jaisalmer Tour Package.

Jain Temples

Over the course of its lengthy history, its fortification have stood Sonar Quila in excellent favour, featuring a 30-foot wall surrounding it, punctuated by 99 bastion and four large entrances, while at the base there's another 15-foot wall, thus giving a double line of defence. It was the site of numerous clashes between the various clans of the region, and it also withstood repeated attacks by Muslim kings such as Aladdin Khilji and Mughal Emperor Humayun (though it did ended up being controlled by the Mughals from the mid-16th to mid-18th century).

The magnificent and awe-inspiring architecture is a seamless blend of Rajput and Islamic styles, with a plethora of enthralling carvings and sculptures found among palaces, temples (including the Laksmni Hindy temple and seven of the aforementioned Jain temples, above), havelis (elaborate merchant houses), and other buildings set along narrow winding pathways that interlock several parts of the fort. Even today, about one-quarter of the city's population lives within these walls, fed by wells, drainage systems, and other amenities, and many run restaurants, hostelries, and shops catering to tourists.

Anagoria

The Raj Mahal Palace, famed for its ornate marble throne and exhibitions of antique Rajput arms, apparel, utensils, and ornaments, is one of the main attractions for visitors. It is paralleled by the five-story Tazia tower, which was built by Muslim craftsmen and features Bengali-style roofing. The palace is open everyday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is 50 rupees for Indians and 250 rupees for visitors, with an additional 50 for photography.
