How to Embrace Your Family Photoshoot Experience

We have some great tips on how to make your family portrait session a stress-free and enjoyable one if the idea of a family photo shoot scares the living daylights out of you

Professional family photos are truly timeless and such an amazing keepsake for future generations. Investing your time, effort and money now will ensure you have beautiful family portraits that can be proudly displayed in your home for the future for all to enjoy.

When it comes to a family portrait shoot, there are a few things to be considered before it starts.

Timing

If you have younger children participating in the shoot, try to book your session at a time when they would be well rested. A rested child makes for happy photos. On that note, make sure that the whole family has had enough sleep the night before, as this helps with the fun and relaxation aspects of the session.

Do’s and don'ts

Get your family excited about the photo shoot instead of offering a reward in return for their cooperation. In our experience, bribery tends to lead to forced smiles and an irritated group of people. Build on the excitement a few days prior, start talking to your family about what is going to happen, what they should expect and how amazing it is that you get to spend this special, uninterrupted time together. Embracing your photo shoot really will assist with a stunning outcome.

Relinquish control

As much as you’ll want to direct your children and/or partner on where to stand and how to pose, it’s best to leave that to our expert photographer. Nicholas has many years’ experience in photographing individuals and families with the goal of achieving amazing portraits for you to cherish for a lifetime.

Selectingthe correct outfits

This is an absolute deal breaker. It’s imperative that you take the time to select the right outfits for each family member, making sure everyone is dressed for the same season, wearing complementary colours and that patterns, if you are going to wear any, do not clash. We do suggest your best option is solid dark colours, however prior to your shoot, our photographer will give you a call to run through any clothing or other questions you may have.

Take a look at our blog posts on ‘What to wear for a photo shoot’ and ‘How to layer to rock your photo shoot’. There are some great tips on what to wear in both these blogs.

It’s not just about posing

The best photos happen when you’re having fun, so joke around and play with your children, hold your partner’s hand, and just let the moments happen. Don’t be worried about where to put your hands or which angle to place your head, you need to focus on having fun, spending precious time with your loved ones and enjoying the shoot for what it is. Leave the worrying up to your photographer – it’s his job, he is experienced and it’s what we are here to do.

Plan Ahead

You will have the opportunity to discuss all your requirements with us beforehand, to ensure that your family portrait session flows with ease. It’s also important to let your photographer know if you have any preconceived ideas of how you would like the session to run or if you have ideas for specific photos you would like taken.

Our aim is for you to enjoy your family portrait experience. Relish this valuable time spent with your loved ones, while allowing us to capture these precious moments in time. We look forward to creating memories for you to treasure forever.
