A Guide To Craft Beer in Singapore

If you've had a beer before, you've probably reached for one from a macrobrewery - a large commercial brewery that makes familiar names such as Tiger Beer or Anchor. But for avid beer fans, it's worth expanding your horizons by learning about and trying craft beer in Singapore.

So, what is craft beer? Craft beers are beers created by small-scale breweries. They are never part of large, commercial brewery brands. As a result, they can produce new and unique beer styles that you can't find on the shelves of the big brands. What else are the differences between craft beer and regular beer?

The categories of craft breweries

There are three categories of craft breweries. Small breweries only produce 6 million barrels of beer a year. (For comparison, Heineken produced 186 million barrels in 2020!) An independent brewery should be at most 25% owned by a beverage alcohol industry member who isn't a brewer. Finally, traditional breweries should primarily make beers and flavours derived from traditional or innovative brewing ingredients and methods. You can find beers of all three categories in a craft beer shop in Singapore.

Boutique beers

Boutique beers are a seasonal collection created by craft breweries that usually follow a theme and use seasonal ingredients. Boutique beers contrast with brews from big beer companies, which last all year. Craft beer enthusiasts in Singapore would wait for these boutique beers for their new innovative flavours.

Kinds of Craft Beers

A practice in craft breweries is to try and create varieties of Indian pale ales or IPAs. You can find IPA beer in Singapore in many craft beer shops and brewpubs.
