IAS Preliminary Examination
The IAS Exam (Prelims) contains multiple choice or objective style questions (MCQs). There are 2 examinations in total; General Studies and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) each carrying 200 points. Candidates must voluntarily take both exams, which have a two-hour time limit each. The IAS Exam only offers "Negative Marking" for each erroneous response during the Prelims round. For wrong responses, 1/3 (0.66) of the total marks for that question will be deducted as a penalty.
To advance to the next stage of the IAS exam, the Mains, students must receive a minimum score of 33 percent on the GS Paper II (CSAT), which is a qualifying paper. For each paper of the IAS Exam, blind applicants are given an additional 20 minutes (Prelims). Candidates must show up for both of the preliminaries for the civil service in order to be evaluated. The applicants' marks in the preliminary examination are not taken into account when calculating their final grades. Only candidates who don't meet the cut-off marks are excluded from the screening test.
