The Kinds of Breast Brachytherapy You Can Get

The Purpose of Treatment for Breast Cancer

There are tons of clinics where you can get brachytherapy in Singapore. Breast brachytherapy helps support External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) by boosting the response rate and improving results. However, it is used as a standalone treatment of early-stage cancer. It is a procedure referred to as accelerated partial breast irradiation (ABPI).

Oncologists use brachytherapy in neoadjuvant therapy. It is a form of treatment that shrinks the tumour before surgery. The risk of cancer from recurring through the reduction of the tumour margins where the cancer cells hide. One of the main advantages of breast brachytherapy is a higher dose of radiation is placed on the tumour with next to no damage to surrounding tissues.

The Types of Brachytherapy You Can Get

Implants and implantation methods used in brachytherapy can vary depending on the stage and type of cancer. You can opt to get temporary or permanent implants that are of different sizes and radioactive strength. Depending on the procedure, your oncologist may use radioactive seeds, pellets, capsules, ribbons, tubes or balloons.

Here are the five most common methods used in breast cancer treatment in Singapore clinics.

1) Interstitial Breast Brachytherapy. It involves the placement of several flexible tubes in the breast tissue. That is where a radiation source is placed.

2) Intracavity Breast Brachytherapy. It is also known as balloon brachytherapy. It is used after lumpectomy to deliver radiation to the breast cavity via an inflatable balloon.

3) Intraoperative Radiation Therapy. This procedure delivers localized radiation during lumpectomy via a cone-shaped applicator and a radiation emitter.

4) Permanent Breast Seed Implant (PBSI). It involves the permanent implantation of low-dose radioactive seeds that prevent cancer recurrence with early-stage breast cancer.

5) Non-Invasive Breast Brachytherapy (NIBB). This newer procedure doesn’t require catheters or implantation. It delivers a concentrated beam of radiation on the breast during a mammogram.
