ASET Assessment Criteria For Certified Technician Membership

What is the benefit of Certified Technician membership?

A Certified Technician (C.Tech) membership will help you enhance your network, credibility and professional recognition.

A Certified Technician (C.Tech) is an applied science, information or engineering technology expert performing routine technical procedures with occasional direct supervision. Besides that, these professionals may assume limited responsibility for any decision-making process.

Eligibility criteria for C.Tech membership:

To win a positive ASET assessment for the attainment of C.Tech membership, you need to be:

·       with a minimum of two years of technical work experience

·       working or looking for work in Alberta or the Northwest Territories

The application and exam fees are non-refundable.

Application process:

1.  Application:

·       Apply online and pay the fees. 

·       Student and T.T. members have to use their existing ASET ID when submitting their application for certification. 

·       Email transcripts or the academic assessment to the ASET office.

2.  Education:

·       Transcripts have to be final and note that the credential was awarded and be original (or true copies certified by a notary, an ASET or APEGA professional member or ASET staff).

·       If you have international education, submit a basic academic assessment conducted by a member of the Alliance of Credential Evaluation Services)

3.  Evidence:

·       You need to upload the required work experience and competency documentation.

·       Offer contact information for professional references.

4.  Exams:

·       Complete the professional practice exam (PPE)

·       You don’t need to the Certification Exam unless you want to be considered for C.E.T.

5.  Assessment:

·       ASET assessment staff will review the documents and ask for extra information if necessary.

·       Subject matter experts will assess documents and ask for extra information if required (2-3 months after the submission).

·       Board of Examiners will review the completed application and make a decision on certification (BoE meetings happen quarterly).

6.  Post-Assessment:

·       The decision letter will be sent to a new member 3 or 4 weeks after the board decision.

·       As a new C. Tech members, have to pay annual dues and get access to member benefits.

·       You may order a framed certificate or/and a member ring.

·       You have to be committed to completing annual continuing professional development (CPD).
