IMechE Continuing Professional Development

An IMechE engineer takes the responsibility for addressing some of the biggest challenges lurking behind the world, both in the present and in the future. However, to do this, the engineer has to keep up with, create and implement the latest developments in technology and ideas.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a fundamental part of any career in engineering, making sure ‘a professionally registered and active engineer stays updated by constantly learning and improving, to develop skills and stay at the cutting edge. Not only this will you contribute to engineering, but it will help you get the most out of your engineering career.

Making the most of your CPD:

A tip from the CPD Assessment Committee is to consider your learning and development a project of yours. You should break down your goals into smaller steps to set realistic targets, identify milestones towards attaining these targets and like any other project, fix your deadlines. With reviews on a periodic basis, you can of course adjust as necessary, and with this approach increase the chances of successfully fulfilling your ambitions in a desirable timeframe.

A recent review of the feedback offered to an IMechE member who submitted their CPD records in recent years has found the most common feedback given to members includes the following:

Ensure that you reflect on all your CPD (more about this below)

You are probably doing more that counts as CPD than you realize; what else can you record?

Never forget to consider what you have learnt from your day job when you record your CPD. On the job, learning is perfectly acceptable and should not be overlooked as learning models indicate this is where most development happens.

CPD comes from different types of sources; it doesn’t only have to be work-related.

Try to be in harmony with your CPD with your interests to make it more beneficial and rewarding.

Refresh your CPD goals on an annual basis; ensure that you check progress towards medium and long-term goals.

Mentoring is very good and rewarding CPD.

Ensure that you include a balance of technical and non-technical CPD.

The CPD Assessment Committee motivates those with IMechE membership to consider the above-mentioned points when they record their CPD to make sure that they are making the most out of the process.
