10 Secret WhatsApp Tricks You Didn't Know Existed

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world with over 1.5 billion monthly active users. And while most people know how to use the app to send messages, there are a lot of hidden features, tips, and tricks that you may not be aware of. Here are 10 WhatsApp secret tricks that you didn't know existed.

1. Check if someone has read your message

Did you know that you can tell whether or not someone has read your message on WhatsApp? Just look for the double-blue check mark next to your message. If it's only one blue check mark, that means your message has been sent but not yet read. If there are two blue check marks next to your message, that means your message has been read.

2. Send a disappearing message

If you want to ensure that a particular message you're sending will self-destruct after a certain amount of time, you can do so by enabling disappearing messages in WhatsApp. To do this, open a chat and tap on the contact's name at the top of the screen. From there, select "Disappearing messages" and choose either 1 hour or 8 hours. Once you've enabled this feature, any messages you send in that chat will automatically disappear after the chosen time period expires.

3. Know when someone was last online

If you want to know when someone was last online on WhatsApp, all you have to do is open up a chat with that person and look at the timestamp next to their name at the top of the screen. This timestamp will tell you when that person was last online on WhatsApp.

4. Send a Message With No Preview

Have you ever wanted to send a message on WhatsApp but didn't want the recipient to see what it says until they open the chat? Well, there's a way to do that! Just go into Settings > Notifications and disable "message previews." Once you've done that, any messages you send will no longer show up in the notification shade—the recipient will have to open up the chat in order to see them.

5. Broadcast Messages

If you want to send out a mass message to multiple contacts without starting a group chat, you can do so using broadcast lists in WhatsApp. To create a broadcast list, go into Settings > Broadcast lists and tap on "New List." From there, add as many contacts as you want and then start typing out your message. When you're done, just hit "Send" and it will go out to everyone on the list individually (without starting up a group chat).

6. Mute a Group Chat

If you're ever in a group chat that's getting a little too noisy for your liking, you can always mute it. Just go into the chat settings (by tapping on the three dots in the top-right corner) and select "Mute." From there, you can choose to mute the chat for 8 hours, 1 week, or even 1 year. Once you've muted a chat, you'll no longer receive any notifications from it—but you can still scroll through it and see what's going on.

7. Customize Your Notifications

If you want more (or less) control over your WhatsApp notifications, you can always customize them to your liking. Just go into Settings > Notifications and you'll be presented with a whole host of options. Here, you can choose whether or not to show message previews, enable notification sounds, and even customize what kind of notifications you receive for each individual chat.

8. Pin Your Favorite Chats

If you find yourself constantly scrolling through your chats to get to the ones you care about the most, consider pinning them! To do this, just go into a chat and tap on the three dots in the top-right corner. From there, select "Pin Chat" and it will move that chat to the top of your list— making it easier for you to find later on. You can pin up to 3 chats at a time.

9. Archive a Chat

If you want to get a chat out of your way without deleting it, you can always archive it. Archived chats will be hidden from your main chat list—but they can still be accessed by tapping on the "Archived Chats" option in the menu. To archive a chat, just go into it and tap on the three dots in the top-right corner. From there, select "Archive Chat."

10. Use WhatsApp Web

In addition to the mobile app, WhatsApp also has a web client that you can use on your computer. This is great for those times when you need to type out a long message or if you just prefer using a keyboard and mouse. To use WhatsApp Web, just go to web.whatsapp.com and scan the QR code with your phone. Once that's done, you'll be able to use WhatsApp on your computer just like you would on your phone.

These are just some of the lesser-known features available in WhatsApp—for more tips and tricks, be sure to check out our full list!
