Different Skin Types & Relevant Skincare Tips

Caring for skin is a highly personalised endeavour. This is largely because your skin type will determine the skincare products and routines you will need to implement during the day and of course, at night.

While it seems logical to assume that all skin has the same demands, it’s important to think about skin types. With this in mind, it seems highly illogical that someone with oily skin would need to use the same products as someone with dry skin.

As such, skincare routines need to differentiate between different skin types. This way, each routine can be targeted to combat certain issues associated with an individual’s designated skin type. Resulting in better skincare and a more healthy-looking complexion.

The different types of skin

When it comes to skin, there are five different types. As these skin types are different, they each have individualised characterisations and needs. It’s worth noting that while genetics play a role in skin types, lifestyle choices will also play a factor.

Oily skin

Oily skin is often identifiable through shiny or greasy patches. This particular appearance is due to the skin producing an excess of sebum. It’s worth noting that sebum is the skin’s natural moisturiser that should be produced in moderation by the sebaceous glands.

Dry skin

Dry skin will typically produce fewer natural oils and result in a dull or even rough appearance. As dry skin is essentially dehydrated, the skin might feel quite tight. As a result, fine lines may be more visible.

Normal skin

Normal skin is labelled as such because the skin is balanced. This means that the skin isn’t prone to breakouts, feelings of tightness or excess spots of oil, particularly in the T-zone. Normal skin is also characterised by small pores.

Combination skin

As the name suggests, combination skills will feature a variety of skin types. Typically, this means areas that are dry and also areas that are oily. These areas may change in accordance with the different seasons.

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is skin that is prone to breakouts or irritations. These irritations may stem from using particularly harsh ingredients. On the other hand, these blemishes or irritations may occur from using too many products.

Skin conditions to consider

Along with different skin types, individuals may also have different skin conditions to navigate. As such, there are four main skin conditions.

Ageing skin

A skin condition that may affect various skin types is ageing skin. This type of skin condition is often associated with a visibly thinner and dryer, almost paper-like appearance.

Dehydrated skin

Another skin condition individuals face is that dehydrated skin. This condition is characterised by the skin appearing dull, tired and even rough looking.

Skin pigmentation

Caused by everything from genetics and hormonal changes to sun exposure and inflammation, skin pigmentation refers to darker patches of skin.

Blemish prone

Breakouts are skin conditions faced by people of all ages. When pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells or environmental pollutants, the skin becomes congested and spots occur.

Skincare tips by skin type

As each skin type is characterised by different features, certain products and ingredients should be used on some types and avoided on others. With this in mind, identifying your skin type is paramount as your skincare routine should be tailored to complement your skin type.

The foundation of any skincare routine, whether your skin type is dry or oily is cleansing, toning and moisturising. This is because these three products work to wash the face, balance complexions and hydrate and soften the skin. All of which provide the base for healthy skin.

It’s also important to remain consistent when implementing skincare tips. There is no magic fix for dark spots or acne scarring. Products take time to penetrate the skin’s surface before working to repair and rejuvenate your appearance.

Additionally, no matter your skin type, following techniques regarding the application is key. With this in mind, it’s advised to apply products in order of their consistency. This means applying in order from thinnest to thickest to achieve effective results.

Oily skin

A gentle cleanser should be used on oily skin twice a day. This will help to remove bacteria that work to clog pores. From there, apply sunscreen and then when applicable, makeup that is classified as non-comedogenic. During your night routine, add moisturiser for hydration.

Dry skin

Those with dry skin should look for products which include shea butter and lactic acid. This is because they work to provide hydration and mild exfoliation which helps fight against the appearance of rough skin. Regular moisturising is advised and long hot showers should be avoided.

Normal skin

While those with normal skin typically do not have blemishes or irritations, it’s important to keep skin clean and hydrated. This means wearing sunscreen, removing makeup, and cleansing the face before sleeping.

Combination skin

Those with combination skin may find common cleansers too harsh. With this in mind, opt for a mild cleanser that won’t clog pores. Exfoliating is also important. However, only exfoliate once or twice a week and try to avoid the T-zone.

Sensitive skin

As sensitive skin is prone to becoming irritated, it’s important only to use products that are labelled gentle and fragrance-free. Moisturisers with soothing ingredients are also advised to help provide hydration without clogging pores.

Tailoring skincare to your skin type

Being comfortable in your own skin is highly important. One way to ensure that you look and feel healthy and happy is to tailor your skincare to your skin type. By identifying your skin type and choosing products and ingredients accordingly, you are giving your skin everything it needs to look and feel nourished.

While it can be tempting to switch to the newest and latest trends in skincare ingredients, it’s important to stay the course. Remaining consistent and diligent in product application works to ensure that your skin is given constant bursts of hydration and other treatments. Ensuring greater effectiveness which in turn leads to better results.
