A specialized Pressure Piping System - A Key Learning

Pressure piping is all piping that is subjected to internal or external pressure, regardless of the medium inside the pipe. Pressure piping is a part of piping system. Piping is used to convey, distribute, mix, separate, discharge, measure, control and stop the flow of fluids and consists of an assembly of pipes, pipe fittings, flanges, bolted joints, gaskets, valves, other constituent or pressurized parts and support parts.

The concept of pipeline

Pipeline is an assembly of pipes, fittings, flanges, bolted connections, gaskets, valves and other components or pressurized parts composed of pipe components and pipe supports to convey, distribute, mix, separate, discharge, measure, control and stop the flow of fluids.

The fluid and design conditions are divided into multiple pipes connected into a group of pipes called “piping system” or “pipeline system“.

The above definition contains two meanings.

(A) The role of piping: is used to transport, distribution, mixing, separation, discharge, measurement, control and stop the flow of fluid.

(1) Fluid: in some standards called media. Fluids can be classified by state or nature.

a) by state.

Gases.

Liquids.

Liquefied gas: is a gas that exists in a liquid state under a certain pressure.

Slurry: is a flammable, explosive, toxic and corrosive slurry medium.

b) By nature.

Fire hazard; refers to the risk of combustible media causing combustion, divided into combustible gases, liquefied gases and combustible liquids. There are three categories: A, B and C.

Explosive; combustible media that may explode when mixed with air or non-combustible media that may cause an explosion at high temperatures and pressures.

Toxicity; graded according to GB5044. There are four levels of highly toxic (extreme hazard) and toxic (highly hazardous, toxic hazard and mild hazard) two categories.

Corrosive. It is a substance that can burn human tissue and cause damage to piping materials.

2) Transporting fluid: rely on external power (using kinetic energy given by fluid transport machinery such as compressors, pumps, etc.) or the driving force of the fluid itself (such as the pressure of the medium itself) to transport the fluid from the source of the pipeline to the end of the pipeline.

3) Distribution of fluids: the distribution of fluids to multiple predetermined equipment or users as specified in the design through the branch pipes in the pipeline system.

4) Mixing fluids: Mixing fluids from different branches in the pipeline system in the pipeline, such as dilution, etc.

5) Separating fluid: Separating fluids from different states inside the pipeline through the branch pipe, such as vapor-liquid separation, oil-water separation, etc.

6) Discharge fluid: discharge the fluid inside the pipeline through the branch pipe, such as overpressure venting, discharge of separated fluid, etc.

7) Measuring fluid: The fluid is measured by the measuring instrument set in the pipeline system, such as measuring flow, pressure, temperature and viscosity, etc.

8) Control fluid: control the flow of fluid in the pipe system through the control elements set in the pipe system, such as pressure regulation, temperature reduction, fluid distribution and cut-off.

(B) the composition of the pipeline: composed of pipeline components, pipe supports (pipe supports), etc., is the assembly of pipes, fittings, flanges, bolted connections, gaskets, valves, other components or pressurized parts and supports.

1) Pipeline components: refers to the components used to connect or assemble into a pipeline, including pipes, fittings, flanges, gaskets, fasteners, valves and special parts of the pipeline. The so-called pipeline special parts, refers to the non-ordinary standard components. It is the special manufacturing of pipeline components according to the engineering design conditions, including expansion joints, special valves, rupture discs, flame arresters, filters, flexible joints and hoses, etc.

2) Pipeline support hanger: a general term for various structures used to support the pipeline or restrain the displacement of the pipeline, but not including the structure of civil construction. There are fixed bracket, sliding bracket, rigid hanger, guide frame, limit frame and spring support hanger, etc. In the national standard “industrial metal piping engineering construction and acceptance specification” is also known as pipeline support, including pipeline installation parts and attachment parts.

a) Pipeline installation parts: refers to the load from the pipe or pipe attachment parts to the supporting structure or equipment components, including boom, spring support hanger, tilt rod, balance hammer, loosening bolt, support rod, chain, guide, anchor, saddle, pad, roller, bracket and sliding bracket.

b) Attachment parts: parts attached to the pipe by welding, bolting or clamping methods, including pipe hangers, lifting (support) lugs, rings, clamps, lifting clamps, fastening cleats and skirt type pipe holders, etc.
