Graphic Design Solutions for a Small Business

When you think of a company such as Apple, your first association is rarely related to their latest software updates. Rather, you (and almost everyone else) think of their logo – a sleek simple graphic design that multi-billion-dollar companies are so often known for.

It is a well-known fact that in business, your design is your first impression. The moment you make it or break it with a client. However, exceptional graphic design is also often seen as a privilege reserved for top-tier companies such as Microsoft and Instagram. It is rarely associated with small businesses. Nevertheless, this does not need to be a rule of thumb – small businesses can have remarkable graphic designs and by following the suggestions from this article, they’ll be one step closer to them!

A pre-step – setting your objective

Most inexperienced companies and entrepreneurs tend to make the same common misstep when it comes to their graphic design. Namely, they choose a design rather than a goal – let me explain. Each graphic design has its own specific purpose. One design will work as a logo, while another will be used for packaging but not vice versa. In other words, a single design cannot work as well in every situation – its purpose matters.

Unfortunately, companies often get ahead of themselves and settle on a design before defining its purpose – will it be a logo or an advertising campaign? Thus, an important note to remember is – define the goal of a design before hiring a web design company to create it. Once you know what your small business wishes to accomplish, the designers will have an easier route to creating the perfect design.

The first step – coordinating your colours

In business, the one crucial point is to make a statement – a statement that your business will be known for. In design, a simple yet effective way of accomplishing this is through colour palettes. While this may sound like a bit of a stretch, the impact of colour coordination on consumer purchases has its roots in scientific data. Namely, research has shown that colours are the leading factor in purchasing decisions for 92.6% of individuals. In short, colour usage is something that small businesses should definitely consider.

One possibility is choosing brand colours that work well with the overall message of the business. In this case, enlisting the help of a creative graphic design studio is more than recommended. After they grasp your business goal, designers will be able to incorporate a colour palette that best represents it. After a few months of seeing it on your packaging, a nude fall colour palette will never look the same again.

The second step – utilizing your fonts

Similar to colours, fonts also play an important role in graphic design. While we rarely think about it, all of us would instantly notice if a corporation such as Google or Microsoft decided to change its signature fonts overnight. The style in which things are written matters to consumers. They use fonts to recognize and identify themselves with companies of their choosing, making fonts another design aspect for small businesses to look into.

While there is no set list of rules for choosing a signature font, there are certain guidelines every business should try and abide by. Firstly, the font should be easy to read, meaning that unintelligible cursives are out of the question. Customers need to not only recognize your message but understand it as well.

Another point to make is consistency. Unlike colours, fonts should be more consistent. Thus, consider using only one to two fonts for your small business. This will make your company easily recognizable to loyal customers and an entirely new consumer base.

A final thought – embrace simplicity

While this article has discussed goals, colours and fonts, exceptional graphic design comes down to one notion – simplicity. To be memorable, a design does not need to be complex. It just needs to catch the attention of one consumer. For that to happen, small businesses must first define and elaborate their goals to designers. Once an experienced designer understands what’s at the heart of your business, they’ll be able to create a design that encompasses those core ideas.
