James Cameron took a long time to Create Avatar: Waterway

It's been 13 years since Avatar—or any other film directed by James Cameron—made its debut on the big screen. Hollywood has changed since then: In 2009, Blockbuster had not even declared bankruptcy. Since then, Disney has acquired 20th Century Fox, the studio that financed the first Avatar film; expensive action movies without superheroes are now rarely green-lit, except for those starring Tom Cruise; and streaming has crippled the cinema business.

But Avatar remains the highest-grossing film in history. While Avengers: Endgame rose briefly to the top spot in 2020, Cameron launched a re-release of Avatar in China to reclaim the title. It did: The film has now grossed a total of $2.9 billion. The director has long planned to make several sequels, but every year, when Disney announces the upcoming slate, they add the addition that the follow-up Avatar has been postponed again. Fans began to doubt Avatar 2 would ever come out, let alone Avatar 3, 4, or 5.

Now, after years spent shooting in New Zealand, the sequel is finally here: Avatar: The Way of Water will debut on December 16th. Set nearly 15 years after the original film, it focuses on former human warrior Jake Sully (Sam Worthington ) who falls in love with the planet Pandora and the Na'vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) in the first film. Jake left his human body to become a Na'vi himself. The couple now have three children, one of whom is voiced by Sigourney Weaver, who played the human character who died in the first film.

As the title suggests, most of Avatar 2 is set in and around the ocean and introduces a new Na'vi ocean tribe called the Metkayina. Avatar 3, which was filmed concurrently, will debut in 2024. The final two parts are scheduled for 2026 and 2028. This is why it's taken so long to make an Avatar sequel and why we're getting so many follow-ups in the coming years.

James Cameron takes time for real-world exploration

Cameron is an avowed sea lover. He made many underwater trips to the wreck of the Titanic; as the story goes, Cameron and and actor Bill Paxton were dining in a sub on the deck of the Titanic on 9/11 and only heard about the terror attack after they emerged from the water.
