The Cornerstones of Great Driving Lessons

Getting your hands on your driving licence can be a costly affair. Irrespective of the driving school you choose, it takes time and money to become a safe and responsible motorist.

But what’s often overlooked is the way in which the quality and effectiveness of driving lessons differ significantly from one driving school to the next. Contrary to popular belief, not all driving lessons follow the same format, nor are they of the same higher quality standard.

The same can also be said of driving instructors, who to some extent have a degree of freedom when it comes to the way they conduct lessons. If you’ve ever had the misfortune of spending an hour (or more) in the company of a frankly awful driving instructor, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.

In any case, it is your money and your driving license on the line, so it simply makes sense to put it to good use. By this, we mean refusing to settle for inadequate driving lessons and accepting nothing other than great driving lessons.

As for what separates the great from the good, there are a few hallmarks to be on the lookout for where truly excellent driving lessons are concerned:

1.    More Time Behind the Wheel

Great driving lessons are those that focus predominantly on practical skills. If there’s anything that needs to be studied on paper (important in the run up to your theory test), it is something you can do in your own time. When you pay for driving lessons, you are paying for practical tuition and to use a specially adapted vehicle. If you feel you’re spending a disproportionate amount of time on theory, consider switching to a different driving school.

2.    Regular Feedback and Helpful Input

Constructive criticism plays an essential role in the driver tuition process. You need to know exactly where your strengths and weaknesses lie, so that you can focus on the latter. This means the provision of regular feedback from your driving instructor, along with all the tips, advice and support you need to polish your driving skills. In addition, they should never make you feel uncomfortable, or in any way ashamed for making mistakes along the way.

3.    Firm Focus on Test Preparation

From day one, everything that takes place during your lessons should be geared towards you successfully passing your practical test. Your instructor should gradually make you aware of all the skills and competencies you will need to demonstrate to receive your license and the kinds of issues that constitute major or minor faults. They should also be willing to (if not insistent on) conducting lessons along the way that are essentially informal mock tests, in order to help you know when you’re ready for the real thing.

4.    A Positive and Friendly Personality

If you don’t click with your driving instructor, it simply isn’t going to happen. Not only will you not enjoy your driving lessons, but you will naturally progress at a slower pace. Great driving instructors are those that are friendly, informal and personable at all times. Not the kinds of stuffy and stone-faced driving instructors of years gone by, who make the whole thing more of a chore than a pleasure.

5.    Great Value for Money

Your driving school should do everything it can to ensure you get the best possible value for money. This means discounts on block bookings, maximum time behind the wheel, flawless punctuality and so on. You should feel that every penny you’re spending is being invested in something worthwhile; otherwise, you’d the better off taking your time and money elsewhere.
