The Legal Metrology Registration (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 (“the Rules”) contain provision for pre-packaged commodities to be sold by retail and to be imported into India. The Rules mandate that the net quantity of the commodity in the pre-packaged form shall be declared on the principal display panel of the commodity and shall be determined by the method specified in the First Schedule to the Rules. The Rules also meticulously lay down the manner and method of sampling and test of such pre-packaged commodities.
