Know All About SSL Certificates and Its Importance

Have you ever caught an eye at that additional “s” while surfing through some important websites over the internet, where there is sensitive data, payment gateways for example? In simple words, that additional “s” is an indication that an SSL certificate backs the website that you are visiting. An SSL certificate is a clear indication of the fact that the website you are visiting is encrypted & any information you entered here will be securely shared with the website.

As a regular user of the internet in a digital era, you must always wish to see the extras in your visiting URL without knowing what it means. Consumers want to see it so that they can trust a website with their personal information whereas marketers or business owners make sure to have this on their websites. It is time to move ahead & understand the term “SSL certificate” better.

What is SSL?

SSL is an abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer, a technology that establishes an encrypted connection between a web server or mail server & a browser or mail client, respectively. SSL is more often known as the successor of Transport Layer Security (TLS).

SSL is a safety protocol that defines the variables in the encryption process for the link & the information that is being propagated. SSL permits the secure transmission of sensitive data like login credentials, credit card numbers, etc. Without SSL, information between a web server & a browser is conveyed in the form of plain text, which makes it prone to theft or misuse. Also, having an SSL certificate improves your website's SEO ranking in SERP.

What is an SSL certificate?

When a website URL moves from HTTP to HTTPS, the website is known to be secured by an SSL certificate. SSL certificate is an information packet that is placed in a website’s origin server to make SSL/TLS encryption possible. This is done with two keys, one is the website’s public key & the other is a private key, which is verified with the server’s identity to undergo communications.

Are there types of SSL certificates? Or are all of them the same?

There are a few types of SSL certifications that are based on the number of domains or subdomains that belong to the website.

  1. A single SSL certificate safeguards only one domain name or subdomain name
  2. Wildcard SSL certificate secures one domain name & its uncountable subdomains
  3. Multi-domain SSL safeguards more than one domain name

Signs that a website is SSL encrypted

The four most clear & visual hints of knowing that information is:

  • A green URL bar
  • HTTPS instead of HTTP
  • A lock sign on the left-hand side of the URL bar

You will surely check for the above visual signs the next time you visit any website if you were not doing it until now. It is a great feeling to click on the padlock & have the surety that your information is safe. On the other hand, if you own a website that does not have an SSL certificate, you must be quick to make it your next mission so that you keep your visitors’ information & privacy intact.
