What is the Difference between C and Z Purlins?

A purlin is a horizontal beam or bar that gives structural support for buildings, typically beneath the roof. The rafters of the building or its walls support the purlins. Although they are most frequently used in metal buildings, these can also replace densely packed rafters in wood-frame buildings. The purlins of a roof sustain the weight of the roof deck. The hardwood panel, plyboard, or sheet metal that forms the roof surface is known as the roof deck. This is often made of concrete, filled with some sort of weatherproofing, and commonly covered in insulation. There are many types of purlins, which are divided into groups depending on the material they are made of and their shape. Different purlins are used for multiple purposes, including as structural wall or floor supports. What is Purlins?

C purlins, as the name implies, are formed as in the C alphabet and are primarily used to support walls and floors. C-section purlins, or cee-section purlins, are built to shape a building shell’s walls and floor joists, making them also suitable for supporting the beams required for flooring. Z purlin:



Stronger than C purlin, a different type of Z purlin is typically used at joints and overlaps. Z purlins, also known as zed purlins, are horizontal beams used to shape the roof and wall joists of building shell structures.
