Organic feed costs to rise on tight soy supplies
December 7, 2021 By Mark Dorenkamp Filed Under: Crops, Livestock, News, Organic
Organic poultry and livestock producers are bracing for even higher feed costs in 2022.
Peter Golbitz, CEO of ag consulting firm Agromeris, says that’s because of a shortage of organic soybeans in the U.S. and around the world.
“Meaning that prices are going to stay high (and) supplies are going to be very tight, and we’re scrambling for supply. So (the U.S.) will probably be importing more whole beans as opposed to meal over the next few months to try and mitigate that situation.”
He tells Brownfield the 70 percent rise in organic soybean prices will be felt by feed buyers and consumers, and he encourages organic livestock producers to develop regional supplies.
“These poultry producers are in areas where there’s soybeans produced as well, and they could be working with farmers.”
Golbitz says that’s what Bell & Evans did when it partnered with Cargill earlier this year to transition 50,000 acres to certified organic.
