Disposing of wooden pallets - 4 best practices you should know

Wooden pallets are incredibly versatile and can be used for a number of different purposes. Many companies offer new wood pallets for sale for a range of uses:

Stacking large and bulky objects for transport. When transporting large and bulky items, it is far safer and easier to send them on a pallet. Palletised deliveries are easy to cost, the items can be securely strapped and all handling is done by machine, increasing personal safety. Palletised deliveries also reduce the likelihood of the items being damaged in transit.

Storage in a warehouse or distribution unit:

As with transport, securing bulky, heavy and oversized items on a pallet allows them to be handled safely by machine, stacked where appropriate and stored safely in a way in which they cannot topple and damage other items or people.

Moving heavy items around:

Whether in a warehouse, distribution unit or at your own premises, securing heavy and large items to a pallet when you need to move them makes the move safer. It can be carried out by machine, reducing the likelihood of operator injury.

Creative alternative uses for wood pallets:

Wood pallets are growing in popularity due to their versatility, environmentally friendly credentials and the ability to re-use them in a number of different ways.

They are ideal for home DIY projects, being uniform in shape, very durable and already treated against rot and woodworm. Many people enjoy making new items out of pallets, such as shoe racks, garden benches, bin storage, fencing and planters. Instagram and Pinterest are full of great ideas for those wanting to start a home improvement project using pallets.

Wood pallets can be used for storing garden equipment, animal feed and bedding and other items which you do not wish to get damp when placed on the ground. They can be used indoors or out, and can be covered with a tarpaulin for additional protection from the elements if necessary.

Finding New Wood Pallets for Sale

Wood pallets can be purchased from a number of manufacturers and are available in a variety of sizes, including Standard pallets, Euro-pallets and 4-way pallets. Some manufacturers will even build a pallet to your own specification. Buying direct from the manufacturer ensures that the pallet that you buy will be clean, fully treated and compliant with ISPM15 requirements.

A cheaper option is to purchase reconditioned pallets from the manufacturer. These will have been used before but will be inspected, repaired where necessary and reconditioned to ensure that they are in the best possible condition for re-use.

If you tell the manufacturer what you will use the pallet for, they can ensure that you purchase the most appropriate size and style to suit your needs.

Disposing Of Pallets:

When you have finished with your pallet and either no longer need it or have only used a part of it, you will need to dispose of it.

1. Because pallet wood has been treated, it must not be burnt on a fire so chopping it into kindling isn't an option. Burning chemically treated pallet wood will release toxic chemicals into the air, which is hazardous to human health.

2. There are many sustainable ways in which you can dispose of your pallet. You can either list it for sale for someone else to make use of, or offer it for free if you simply want it removed from your premises.

3. If the pallet is still in very good condition, you could contact the manufacturer to see if they would buy it back from you to recondition and resell.

4. Pallets can be recycled at household recycling sites for free. Employing this disposal route ensures that they will be appropriately handled and every effort will be made to reuse the wood, making this a sustainable and eco-friendly disposal method. If you do not want to make the trip to the recycling centre, many pallet recycling companies will collect directly from you.

Wood pallets are versatile and environmentally friendly. Many companies offer new wood pallets for sale that can be used to improve operator safety, protect fragile objects from damage and create beautiful DIY projects. When you no longer need them, they must be responsibly disposed off to prevent damage to the environment and human health.
