What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. It is characterised by repeated episodes of complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, which leads to a reduction or cessation of airflow. As a result, the body and brain may not receive enough oxygen, causing the person to wake up briefly to gasp for air.

There are two main types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA). OSA is the more common form of sleep apnea diagnosed by Sleep Study Treatment in Delhi NCR and occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat fail to keep the airway open during sleep. CSA, on the other hand, is a less common form of sleep apnea that occurs when the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the muscles that control breathing.

Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, waking up gasping for air, waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. Risk factors for sleep apnea include obesity, a family history of sleep apnea, age, male gender, and certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

If left untreated, sleep apnea can increase the risk of serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Options for Sleep Apnea Treatment in Delhi NCR include lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, avoiding alcohol and sedatives, and positional therapy, as well as medical treatments such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, oral appliances, and surgery in severe cases.
